It was technically a thing but knights mostly did it for self gratification when their importance started to diminish. A lot of myths come from the time in france where knights would do things like sit on bridges and challenge people to duels to rescue maidens they'd "kidnapped" by taking their glove and waiting to give it to someone to save her and all sorts of weird shit.
