I've found the community to be really friendly so that helped me into staying.
>>
Nothing. Its one of the worst mmos on the market.
>>
It managed to stay alive with a sizable playerbase, which I guess is the best accomplishment an MMO can achieve these days
>>

I enjoyed it, but there's a couple of things I really wish they did differently.

I wish there was more incentive to talk to people. I also wish HW wasn't just a reskin of ARR.

Been playing since 1.0, run an FC that does patch centric endgame, master crafter gatherer, and a class for each archetype, ask me anything.

The game is mediocre and is a sour slap in the face for multiple reasons, but its the best thing on the market currently because of how things degraded.

In the end it comes down to MMO's being a social game, none of the achievements or grinds are worth a damn unless your sharing them with like minded individuals. For all its flaws, this is where the people I care about are and because of that im sticking to it. I'd move if something objectively better came along, and wait for people to follow suit, but nothing simply has.

No true sandbox games have come out in recent years that were anything but repackaged failure korean games that new devs looking to milk sunk their claws into before shredding the games apart. Nothing but theme parks and chat emulators time and time again.

The issue is simply that MMO's were created for a different generation, with different incentives and interests. We are no longer a realistic demographic, people who want aw world to explore and be a part of, the best we can hope for is group cooperative challenges you can overcome for a sense of community. Worlds are replaced by raidfinders and hubs.

And for the record, pvp is almost never worthwhile, in ANY MMO, barring vanilla WoW and the short lived Warhammer game.

Everything 2.3+ until it fell horribly flat on it's face with HW.
Fuck, ARR was magical in it's prime, then the expansion got shilled so hard it brought a wave of wowfugees over that the community hasn't been able to recover from even though the playerbase has gone on a mass exodus since 3.0
>>
>>343868419
Nothing? It's like the epitome of a modern dumbed down themepark MMO.

Lol, 90% of players would gladly agree on the auto grouping in the SW Galaxies back then
Different generation, my ass
Why people who obviously don't know shit about mmo genre always try to spread their worthless opinions? Even worse when they came with ways to "fix" genre without even understanding fundamental problems of modern mmo. This is why we have people who think that "pristine" servers in wow are good idea
>>
>>343872060

Nostalgia creeping over your eyes hard friend, 2.0 Was incredibly shit.
>>
>>343872060
2.3+ was around the time they started introducing some of the more interesting mechanics to the game.

It felt like maybe Yoshi was following through on his promise to appeal to the old school crowd once XIV had an established playerbase.

Then HW happened and I got cucked.
>>
>>343869709
Not him, but it falls short in a lot of areas for a modern MMO.

Don't get me wrong, if we are going to compare this shit to WoW and other tab target MMOs, then it wins hand down.

Problem is, it could do so much more with the current tech at hand. The customization for characters is incredibly limiting, and the combat is dated garbage.
>>
>>343868419
Its a good looking run-of-the-mill MMO with the FF coat of paint slapped onto it. Works for me (but definitely could be better).

2.0+ SEEMED good because they were implementing things that were supposed to be ready for launch. They were able to push out quality content each patch because it was mostly done. Then the expansion came out and they did a collective "Oh shit, now what?" and exposed themselves as hacks.

>>
>>343873218
Are you implying XI was anywhere near as much of a themepark as XIV?
>>
>>343873564
Well, yes
There themepark and sandbox mmo, no middle ground
But if you want to talk about themepark levels:
Everquest: you visited themepark by yourself and looking on the many interesting things
XI: you visited themepark by yourself, but it's just a poor made copy of everquest themepark, there nothing to do except screaming on the gooks using auto translator
WoW; Someone holds your hand but there many interesting things to do
XIV: good copy of wow themepark

>>
>>343874746
Sandbox=your own adventure and content is usually player generated(SWG, ultima, darkfall)
Themepark=here is content, go look at it(EQ, WoW)
Things like "FFXI was really about going out into the world on your own and finding out what was on offer" you can say about literally any mmo, even WoW

>Hating on XI because you can't stop sucking EQs dick

I can honestly say that EQ, AC, DAoC, and XI have been the only MMOs I ever found remotely enjoyable. While they all borrowed from previous entries in the genre, none came near the level of copy-paste and watering down that is WoW and its ilk.
>>
Flash in the pan. Was at the right place at the right time (WoW getting worse and worse) on top of the fact that Final Fantasy is a marketable IP with an already semi successful MMO under its belt. I'm surprised the shitty initial 2010 release didn't take too much steam out of its momentum.

The game is still at one of its worse points right now.
As long as there is a normal version of the raid nothing will ever change my mind on this. What is the point in doing weekly void arks and grinding out your weekly allotment of lore tokens if you aren't raiding? And what is the point in raiding if you've already canonically defeated it in normal mode? I know they're at a bit of an impasse in regards to getting casuals to step up and clear the harder fights like Coil, and so they can't have that heavily referenced in the main story. We'll probably get something along the lines of a nod and a knowing smile from Alisae next patch for people who have cleared it; and this sucks.

Also doesn't help that the current raid's story is cheese. It's fucking cheese people. Cheese! How do you go from fighting the embodiment of a race's eternal anguish to CHEESE!?

Anyway -

FUCK DAILY CRAFTING QUESTS THAT ARE MANDATORY FOR ALL CRAFTERS FOR THE REST OF THE ENTIRE FUCKING EXPANSION

FUCK WEEKLY LOCKOUTS AS LONG AS THE RAID HAS A NORMAL MODE

and fuck all you complacent assholes who never raided in the first place - why do you even do any of this shit? Why bother grinding out the best ilv you can get if you aren't doing anything with it? In the developer's endeavor to keep you all on the same level with the raid story they have completely fucked up the progression of the game.

It's a generic MMO but not insultingly bad.

That is literally it. All it managed to do correctly was avoid being really bad like most MMOs. It's still not good though.
>>
>>343879215
I'm not raiding savage because find the fights boring. I'm not fighting the enslaved, gender-bent soul of Nael, I'm fighting a gobbie ontop of a spider-bot that has a cat that runs around the room and buffs it by meowing love-hearts at it.

I won't be fighting the enslaved soul of Louisoux - I'll be fighting some random big giant robot to 80's big robot anime music (complete with kids cheering as it enters the chorus.

And I don't know what I'll be fighting for the very last encounter. As far as I'm concerned it could be a running battle across the entirety of the Hinterlands in a desperate attempt to save Idle-shire and I still wouldn't care because it would have nothing on fighting the imprisoned embodiment of a dragon civilization's anguish.

Also they likely won't put any big CGI cutscene in there for the finale. And even if they do I'll see it on the very first day of the patch when I do the normal mode anyway so heyyyy fuck you.

It has two positionals, one rear and one flank. The rest of their abilities are free. They do have a GL equivalent, but it's much easier to keep up because it doesn't need to be stacked, it lasts 70 seconds, you don't need to attack anything to put it up, and they have a weaponskill that refills its duration.

Heavy thrust (flank) comes as early as level 12 and should be up 100% of the time.

Chaos Thrust (back) comes at level 50.

Their primary positionals will be at level 60, which are technically the same exact move but done at flank or rear. Which one you need to use is procced randomly.

Well, it is. Full Thrust and Chaos thrust will both proc either "Sharper Fang and Claw" which is to use Fang and Claw (Flank) or "Enhanced Wheeling Thrust" to use Wheeling Thrust (Rear).

In previews Full Thrust would always proc Sharper Fang and Claw and Chaos Thrust, Enhanced Wheeling Thrust (this might be swapped around, I don't remember). Either way, it wasn't random. Either way, Fang and Claw and Wheeling Thrust are LITERALLY the same moves minus positionals. They both do 200, 290 with positionals, and refreshes Blood of the Dragon by 15 seconds. There's no other differences.

DPS? No. Ninja has the least amount of them but they're more involved with juggling their Mudras around. Dragoon has a few more that aren't a big deal. Monk is your major positional based job.

Ninja used to have no positionals besides Sneak/Trick Attack. Trick attack is what you use in battle anyways and hits from behind.

My biggest problem with XIV, and where it completely falls apart for me, is just how incredibly shallow the 'RPG' elements are

>There's no sense of character building/customization. The way stats work in tandem with how one dimensional classes are means there's literally no reason not to dump every stat point you're given into whatever your class' primary damage stat is. There's no way to alter how your class plays in the least

>Gear progression is completely linear. ilvl dumbs the whole system down into simple stat scaling, and the secondary stats are so minor and simple that there's no reason to not just have whatever the highest ilvl piece is (Aside from very minor points like reaching a certain SS to get in additional GCDs). No interesting things like procs, traits, damage types etc. Makes collecting new gear lack impact because it's mechanically identical to whatever you had before

>Damage types are class universal. All of PLD's attacks do slashing damage, even shield bash. All of MNK's attacks do blunt damage, even when the weapon they're using is a giant set of claws. And it doesn't even matter because all enemies have equal resistance to all damage types. It's only there to give classes debuff utility (Very boring debuff utility)

>Same with magic/elemental damage. The flavor text says things like 'deal fire damage', when it's blatantly false. There's just a universal 'magic damage'

It's probably because I come from XI, where the game was less mechanics and more character structure, but XIV doesn't do it for me at all. There's nothing to it. It also means my favorite FF class ever would never work in the game because there's not enough depth to support it
>>
>>343883352
I still can't decide between just sucking it up with XIV or playing on the XI private server.

XI private server has 300+ people on at a time and 1k+ unique logons weekly. It's pretty dank.

Probably the best option in the barren MMO wasteland until the TBC private servers release "late summer".
>>
>>343883352
There is elemental damage/resistance, it's just completely worthless because there's never any reason to want to deal or resist a specific type of damage, which is largely for balance reasons.

It's all just taking cues from WoW. WoW used to have more stat variety, where even stuff like Int and Spirit could provide minor benefits to non-magic classes. But over time they noticed that people would just stack whichever stat was most beneficial for their class, so they homogenized it/dumbed it down to make it easier and so there was less "useless" gear floating around. Now the character UI doesn't even display most stats, and many stats do the exact same thing, just applying to different classes.

It's a tricky problem because in co-operative games like this where the central "meta" is getting strong enough to take down scripted bosses with significant gear checks (to keep people paying and grinding for better gear), playing in a way that is "non-optimal" is frowned upon. Even if you provide build options, chances are you will be more or less browbeaten into using whatever setup is the most efficient.
>>
>>343883352
But what about the super deep cross class abilities????

I hate this idea they have that anything that was in 1.0 shouldn't be in the game now. I can understand removing elemental resistances from enemies (even if I don't really like it) because of how BLM works but there is no defense for the rest

>>343883582
>subjobs
>job points
>merits
Cross class abilities had a chance to be decent even after they were neutered from 1.0 but they limited them to class only (which also means that the new jobs have no abilities that can be used by other classes, at least until classes are inevitably removed) and gave an extremely limited selection.

Does XIV have the least interesting tank meta in an MMO?

The tank classes are literally just DPS that have enmity built into their attacks. It feels like there's almost no unique/specific tanking mechanics in the game

>>
>>343883976

In my experience pre-wow, suboptimal 'builds' are were fine as long as they were functional. If they made sense and could be used to clear content, then it was good enough. It didn't matter that there was something better or more optimal. I've never been harrassed in an MMO for not using whatever the flavor of the month was

But in XIV I can see the problem. The bosses and encounters aren't built for it. They're 100% scripted dance routines with strict DPS cheks and one shot mechanics. It's not about character build or strategy, it's about reacting to a set mechanic while mashing out a rotation
>>
>>343884046

there's class specific buffs/debuffs built into abilities as well, and it makes enough of a difference that one tank will be taken over another depending on the encounter

what were you expecting precisely?

>>343879821
>it's not fun unless it's edgy and grimdark

>>
>>343883352
One thing that made XI awesome was the ability to use multiple weapons on certain classes. It is also what makes XIV so damn stupid; being unable to equip different weapons. I loved the weapon rank system and how certain weapon skills were only available to certain classes. Another thing was the armor was a bit more unique in some cases early on. I quit after my trial was over in XIV but the gear progression was so bad on 2.0 re-release.
>>
>>343883976
>There is elemental damage/resistance

No, there's only damage resistances. Enemies do elemental damage, but there's no way for players to deal it themselves
>>
>>343884046
Dont really get what a tank should even be like apart from being a tanky damage dealer. Wildstar probably provided the most enjoyable tanking experience to date, but even that was basically just a DD holding Aggro.
>>
>>343884351
But Coil wasn't edgy or grimdark. In fact, Alexander despite cheerful music and gobbie shit actually makes passing attempts at edge.
>>
>>343884315

I'm not really sure, honestly. An active, mechanical way to mitigate damage? A steeper curve on holding hate (So it's actually a problem, and not just a total snowball that makes playing tanks more about spending as much time in DPS stance as possible)?

The customization for your character's face is certainly limited (4-5 presets for eyes, mouth, nose, etc) but there's plenty of variety in other places. It's certainly no Black Desert Online character creator, but BDO's character creator alone doesn't make it good.

As for combat, what should a modern MMORPG's combat even look like? More action oriented? More like TERA? I struggle to even think of any games that distance themselves from WoW style combat.
>>
>>343884553
MKB. You can learn to use a controller and it's serviceable and they did a good job adapting the interface but the game is still hotbar-based Windows-widget-UI-style MMO and MKB offers a lot more freedom.

On the vast majority of populated servers they're all taken up, so your only option then is to buy from someone for a huge markup.

I'm pretty sure its fairly commonplace for MMOs to be an expansion or two ahead in production, thats how production pipelines work after all.

MMO's almost universally become shit after a certain amount of time. They all crash and burn, usually by changing some core concepts or giving up certain ideals to match modern standards etc. It happened to XI. It happened to SWG. It happened to Maple Story. It happened to WoW

And yet here we are, already on the second expansion for XIV and it hasn't become good yet. We're already nearing the point where MMO's start to fuck up and lose everything, and it hasn't even started going anywhere yet

I'm genuinely interested to see how XIV fucks it up even more

2.0 had a shorty playerbase, FF retards couldn't even handle Titan HM and threatened to quit the game of they didn't dumb it down. SE didn't listen and made 2.1 and 2.2 the best updates the game has ever seen. After that the game went downhill.

I like how faggots on /v/ like to bitch about MMOs catering to the 1%, but once SE started focusing on content for casuals and "midcore" (see egocentric casuals) it's been nothing but rollfacing ancient content on easy and grinding the few bottable instances for rewards that act as another gate in the gear treadmill. All they did was increase the amount of grind you need to do to compete in endgame and be available to party with people.

Good joke. GW1 would have been great had you been able to jump, or at least get off of a fucking ledge. I still remember that ice area where you had to walk all the way to get down from the ledge.

>>343886483
Makes character movement more skill based, requires you to properly aim, makes macro spamming significantly harder unless their auto aim, makes you independent in fights with a high amount of targets, gets rid of LoS issues such as cancels AFTER the spell finished casting etc. The only upside of tab targeting is the target lock for healer, but since pure healers are cancer anyway not much of value was actually lost.

Black Desert and Vindictus basically have the perfect combat system already. Heals and buffs are AoE so that problem got solved as well.

everyone starts off at level 1 and as you gradually progress through the deep dungeon floors you will find gear, items, and level up. when you're done with the dungeon, you get EXP in the outside world that's based on your current class level you went in as.

the incentive to do it is to have fun, level alt classes, and get a powerful weapon that will help you raid savage if you grind enough.

Supposedly they're going to add more floors later on which will make it actually challenging. Curious to see if that holds up. The idea is interesting but if it's just braindead farming then it will just be painful.

It's going to turn out like Diablo 3's greater rifts, just watch.

>floors 150-200 are seriously difficult
>some classes cant do it at all solo/duo
>even for the classes that can, you need to luck into good floor layouts/buffs to clear it
>people complain that the few people that get to 200 are only on the leaderboard thanks to RNG.

How to fix FFXIV:

-Get rid of ilvl and the stats such as Strength, Dexterity, etc..
Keep Determination, Skill Speed, etc and make unique stats allocation for every piece of gear instead of having a primary and a secondary stat

-Bring back elemental and physical resistances and add them as stats on gear

-Randomize encounters instead of making them scripted

-Incentivize job switching by making all tank jobs, melee dps jobs, ranged dps jobs, etc share the same gear

-Make the relic quests much easier if you've completed them on at least one job

-Add a system where you can change the effects of your abilities off combat.
Example: make Cover only redirect magic damage, make Medica damage foes instead of healing, etc...

I can only agree with your last two points, I'd love if the relic were slightly easier on your second pass, like you can skirt your way through crystal farming with multiple drop chances or something.

There are literally breast and muscle sliders.

Why is it that when /v/ shits on FFXIV they do it with fucking lies?

I think that in itself is proof FFXIV is a good game. /v/ can't criticize it without telling lies about it.

>b-b-b-but the breast sliders don't let you have tits that are bigger than your head!!!

Boofuckinghoo. They don't let you have a completely flat chest either, but they're still there.

>people say FFXIV caters only to casuals
>alexander gordias was so hard it destroyed a huge part of the raiding community
>patch 3.3's nidhogg and weeping city of mhach has had people crying that it's too hard for content that isn't the tippy toppiest of hard content

Yeah, no. They want to make hard shit, it's just video games in general have shitters as the biggest section of the demographic. Trying to make shit that wont piss them off but will also feel enjoyable for people who like a challenge is like walking a tight rope.
