I got really, really good at the dueling mode, but the controls are absolutely shit tier. The movement never responds the way you want it to, there is no real control over combat. It isn't clunky because it has a steep learning curve, its clunky because its fundamentally flawed.

Other than that there is pretty much nothing to the main game. The lore is super lacking, there aren't many items so there is no real incentive to explore everything, and if you manage to get far enough without dying, you can reach the end in about 40 minutes give or take. It isn't the least bit fleshed out.

The concept of a dark and somber low fantasy game is awesome. Visually it looks like something I'd love, but there just isn't any gameplay to speak of, and this absolutely is one of those titles that will never be finished.
They need to just drop the control scheme all together and start over. Have set buttons for different attacks, and then use the mouse to control swing speed independently. As is, using the mouse for movement, weapon swings, and controlling the camera is just stupid.

Player: "Hey I bought this game to support you but I'd like to say that the combat is just too clunky and random to get very far unless you get really lucky. Any chance of adding a save feature so you don't have to lose all your progress or want/need to take a break?"

Developer: "Uhmmmmm nope, the game was intended to be difficult it's not for babies if you can't handle the difficult combat and excellent controls then maybe you shouldn't be playing my games. I am not going to dumb them down for you just because you paid to support development. I make games for me :)"

The combat isn't clunky at all once you get a grip of it. The learning curve just deters everyone because they expect to be overpowered murderhobos from the get go, and aren't used to skill based difficulty.

t. 100+ hours in Exanima.
>>
>>343871663

>>
>>343871663
That video is the definition of clunky. The player is flailing around like an uncoordinated drunk.

It feels as awful as it looks. I can sit down and beat all the opponents in the arena without issue most of the time, but its sloppy and stupid as shit. Time their strikes, rush forward, then flail around.

The controls are bad. There is no defending them.

It's the purchase I have the most remorse over. I thought the guy was going to improve on the combat when I got it but it's been over a year now.

It's like nobody ever told him he's making a game and if he wants it to sell, there's has to be a balance between challenge and entertainment. Rigidly refusing to add basic things like a saving system because it doesn't fit some artistic(autistic?) vision is as lazy as it is financial suicide. If you want a game that can kill you at any time, you need a way to save progress. Or controls so tight that beginners stand a chance.

Very few people are going to bother getting good at something which is fundamentally dull and offers no payoff in any way, much less pay for it and spend their free time on it.
>>
>>343872541
>physics have nothing to do with the game at all

>Q: Why does my character look like he’s drunk?

>A: Exanima uses motion synthesis; this means movements are created from simulated muscle contractions which take into account momentum, inertia and physics. Motion synthesis allows movements to be dynamic and free-flowing instead of being restricted by predetermined static animations. This means every time you fight someone it plays out in a completely different and unique way.

>Due to the complexity of the system it may take a while to learn how to effectively control your character so the movements may appear a bit strange. However, once you get past the initial learning curve then your movements will become much more fluid and natural looking

>>343872791
The reward is surviving and advancing to a new level with stronger bosses and better gear, different atmosphere and more hidden lore. If that's not an incentive enough to continue playing, then I guess the game isn't for you. But then I'd also call you a scrub and ask you to go back to your 5-button MOBA's or whatever you play.

You are absolutely retarded. I refuted your point, and you claim it isn't true. If you'd actually played the game beyond the two or so matches you tried before calling it stupid, you'd realize that the combat actually works like that. You get a 'feel' for it.

Where are you even getting this from? I've played the game for over a hundred hours. >even more bullshit defending a scam artist

They made a kickstarter claiming they had a revolutionary game, made by an expert team who were some of the best in the business. They stated that all they needed was a little bit of money to get up off the ground.
All this time later and they still don't have a game with even a finished story. Just an empty tech demo, a piss poor one, that ends abruptly.

The combat never gets "fluid" ever. You're a lying faggot for even bothering to type out something so laughable. Its terrible, and nothing in the game makes use of physics as claimed. All the environmental interactions, which are horribly limited since the game isn't complete and never will be, are lifeless and stale. Exactly what you'd see from something 10 years ago.

A shit tier developer used his already existing pet project to cash in on idiots willing to hand out their money for empty promises. That makes him a scam artist.
I'm sure you'll keep on defending him though, shit eating idiot.

I like Exanima, but after playing Dark Messiah iv come to the realization that fun physics based combat doesn't need people to flail around like drunken noodles.

You can have a stiff character and animations, but make it feel more fluid and physics based than it really is by having a lot of physics interactions on top of that.

I feel like Exanima would have benefited from instead of being you manually swinging the weapon, you pressing M1 and having the weapon swing as a set animation but the physics ties into what outcome that is.
>>
>>343874260
>It's already fun, though
It's not, though. It has incredibly narrow appeal and the devs are not going to sell more than a couple hundred copies at most, considering how dismissive, arrogant and delusional they are.

Telling paying customers to "git gud" at your awful shit combat system is a good way to go bankrupt. It's an unknown indie game, it needs to allow non-autistic players to partake too or it will fail.

It already has in some ways.

Sure it's fun for a few minutes but it loses it charm real quick and since there's nothing else to it except showcasing the laughable "physics" combat, it ends up one of those titles you never play again afterwards (though some desperately try to justify their purchase by stating how much time they've spent on it and how great it is - also funny, but in a sad way)

What's even more sad is that the combat is unintentionally funny, the guys making it really think it looks good and that it's precisely like real-world combat. They say they were planning to do an entire RPG game using said physics as the base for it. Considering regular RPG's are already niche market at this point, it's almost chilling to imagine how badly a real game made with this combat system would flop.

Exanima isn't a game in itself, it's a prologue/teaser/tech demo for a much larger game. It will never be 'finished' because they're working on Sui Generis as the full release. I don't know why they put it on Early Access in the first place, it was meant to be a one-off download for backers but I guess it got really popular so they decided to put it on Steam.

The concept for the full game is actually really interesting, it's designed so that there's no reloading; when you die you respawn magically but the world doesn't change, so dead characters will stay dead and there's no way back if you fuck something up. I think it's meant to be like New Vegas where you can kill absolutely anyone without breaking the choice-based quest system. Again, no idea if the devs will actually deliver since the Kickstarter was years ago but I'm hoping we get something better than Exanima out of it.

Try removing armor as he barely gives a fuck about it with his attacks anyway. Just keep a chest and a helmet for when he pats you on the back as you lay down. I've had limited success in odd corners while ducking and hacking away.

If you get the monsters attention the skeletons will help you kill it but only until he switches aggro to them. When that happens they just run again. In any case, just run from everything until an opportunity arises.

If you are gonna make physics based combat. You gotta add shit like kicks, shoves and grapples.

The most satisfying thing to do in this game is shoulderbash some cunt up against a wall and hammer his head in while he tries to get in

Fair enough. It's fleshed out enough to enjoy the core gameplay, though.

AFAIK, they'll be adding that along with dismemberment.

Fuck you.

Does there exist a symbol for irony via text? I understand you thought me serious since this is /v/ so I thought I'd ask.

Are you aiming this at Exanima? It has had some significant updates since release.

I'll also say what has already been said, Exanima is basically a tech demo for Sui Generis, the devs actual full game they are working on. Don't expect any kind of complete release of Exanima as it will never exist.

Too on the nose for my taste. I guess I'll just post images with "irony" somewhere in the filename.

>actual full game they are working on
Sure thing.

Holy shit, this only cements the fact that /v/ is full of underage faggots, go git gud

Great looking flash game you got there
>>
You know what an Early Access game that has regular substantial updates actually looks like? From The Depths.

I miss old /v/. They'd fawn over this game.

Where to discuss vidya like that in this day and age?

>w-waah...

torrented the game and completed the arena mode once, the game is fucking QWOP tier garbage that is fun for 20 minutes

saying that the game gets better when you "get good" is equally retarded as saying that eating shit is actually fun if you learn to swallow it whole
