And the thing about SO5 is that the combat is only theoretically good.
There's a couple systems in place,like how the "cancels" work, how few arts you can have bound to quick commands, and how much super armor you get on art use, that all add up to the winning strategy being to spam one strong skill non-stop in every battle.

In all likelihood that is precisely the case. Square gave the team a shoestring budget and told them basically just to make something not shit, and given we have SO4 as a benchmark for what is shit, they just had to not do that. It's not very good, but it's not really offensively bad at anything either. Just something to remind people that it exists, and now perhaps we can get a "real" Star Ocean with the sixth numbered game.
