I have a somewhat similar story with Bloodborne. I was stuck on Rom for like 7 hours straight so I gave up, put the game back in its case, and gave it to my friend to complete the next day. I got it back from him around 2 months later and beat Rom on my second go, The rest of the game was a cakewalk and it baffles me how I had so much trouble with it. Sometimes the best solution to overcoming something is just to take a break and try again.

I broke the disk of some PS1 racing game when I was like 7 or so because it had some issue where it would constantly pause itself (even though nothing was wrong with the controller), my mum was just like "well we can't take it back" and I realised how stupid I was.

I've never broken a controller but I'm tempted to destroy my dualshock 3 whenever I hold it. It's so flimsy and hollow that it feels like I could shatter it with one good twist. It gives me an urge to see how much punishment it can really endure.
