Indie games are trash because they do the most minimal amount of work on them to "recreate" the 8bit era.
You then get fucking ugly games that are clearly 16 bit colored games, usually boring as fuck platformers or "meme" games.
The gameplay is usually not even present, and sometimes the developer will make the game "hard" for the sake of "we have the hardest game around!!" viral marketing.
indie devs are mostly hipsters, people who grew up playing Atari or NES, and they want to rekindle that love but they have no actual skill in game design.
It's an easy route for them because they'd rather plop out a shitty pixel game over trying to push themselves to make something unique.
Also AAA games are trash.
AA and A titles are still good, even better
Indie games are bad in the same way your college band's demo cassette was bad.
As much as we lionize the DIY aesthetic, true masterpieces almost always take time, effort, and talent. Indie games look and perform the way they do not because the programmer truly intended for them to be that way, but because they can't do anything else.

shit was coded entirely in assembly and it still reached a point where there just couldn't be anything else on the screen or it would crash
retro pixel art is never, ever a deliberate design choice. that's pure marketing drivel. it's an excuse
