The game throws bullshit it at you every now and then but it's pretty good, how come I barely hear anyone talking about it?

V is like III 2.0
>>
>>343699576
I heard, playing that one now
>>
>how come I barely hear anyone talking about it?
Because frankly it's not very good compared to others in the series. If you like 3 you'll probably love 5, 6 and 7.
>>
I agree, 3 is very underrated. My personal favorite of the original Final Fantasy games.

Because III is very forgettable and V does every III did but way better. Anyways,

>GOD TIER
VI
VII
IX

IV
V
X
Lightning Returns

>DECENT TIER
I
III
VIII
X-2
XII
XIII-2

II
XIII

the 8-bit FF games are often considered badly aged, and the series in general didn't really catch on here in west before FF7 came out.

That being said, I did enjoy the fan-translated NES original FF3 quite a bit. It's definitely better than the NDS remake.

It will be fantastic if people stop with this shit
This "tier" shit or anything related to this is why FF threads are fucking terrible and full of autism

Just stop, no one cares about how shitty is your taste
>>
>>343701189
that's alright, but fairly unpopular opinion.

it is quite hard to get into FF1 this day and age, especially the NES original.
>>
I play a lot of older RPGs. But I couldn't get through III. The characters and story are some of the most bland I've seen for an RPG. But I can overlook that if the gameplay is okay. But then the gameplay also aged horribly compared to other NES/Genesis RPGs.

And no, Aria's death wasn't powerful. It was just as badly executed as most deaths in the FF series. Though its easy to see where they got the idea for Aeris.
>>
>>343701519
The story wasn't what kept me going but you're right. If the game hadn't forced the player to switch classes five times (technically once) then it would've been great.
>>
>>343699510
Because 90% of the FF fanbase is handicapped and can't stand actual gameplay so they stick to FFVI and later games and MAYBE play FFIV and shit on it.
>>
>>343701356
That's a shame too because there's a lot to enjoy from the earlier FFs, they're still very repayable.
>>
>>343701736
>implying that forcing the player out of his comfort zone is a bad thing
FFV did it better but there is nothing wrong with what III did. Even Garuda is beatable without 4 Dragoons.

2 was weird, technically still enjoyable but it was like they had no idea how to reproduce the success of the first one.

Hopefully the Bravely series becomes a staple and comes to non-handhelds, eventually. Same with Tactics series as the mix-n-match system is pretty similar with Bravely and V.

Its more that the FF team tries to reinvent everything for each new game. They don't keep what worked well in previous games but just throw it out in favor of new ideas. Sometimes this works, but most often it just alienates the fans and causes new players to be confused.

Not that it mattered much after FFV since the games became piss easy and just a series of cutscenes. I honestly don't know why they try and even have combat mechanics anymore. Just make FF into a visual novel. That's what its trying to be.
>>
Want to ruin an FF thread?
IX is a masterpiece, play it anon, its miles above the others and has best everything except the battles.

FF was never that hard outside of a couple of exceptions like the Marsh Cave, but my fucking god it's like they went out of their way to lobotomize the series starting with VI.

How could I not? VI and VII are the games that torpedoed FF gameplay and made sure it would never, ever come back until 4HoL and Bravely Default, neither of which were mainline FF games.
>>
>>343710608
I can, because I liked XIII quite a bit, loved its sequels, and can't stand any of the job-system games or XII / MMOs.

>>
>>343710686

Since my favorite game has even better music, I'd say so. That aside, the music is consistently the best part of the FF series. Even the bad games end up having good music. Probably why my favorite FF game is Theathrythm.
>>
>>343711131
I didn't post the soundtrack to FFVII...
>>
>>343710960
X only comes into its own in its post-game, which has problems in that when you get there, abilities like Quick Hit and multihit overdrives start dominating the game.

If it was actually difficult and needed me to pay attention more than once in a blue moon before postgame, it would have been good. It didn't, and on top of that it subjected me to an unskippable story and characters so bad that they might as well have given me cancer.
>>

>If it was actually difficult and needed me to pay attention more than once in a blue moon before postgame, it would have been good. It didn't, and on top of that it subjected me to an unskippable story and characters so bad that they might as well have given me cancer.
This b8 though
>>
>>343710428

FF is only hard when they have shitty story based bosses or random story events you can't prepare for. FFIII and IV did this the most.

Aside from those however, its not hard. Because like any RPG, you can just save, try something, then reload and do it more efficiently. FF only gets hard when they have no way to save before a major fight or those stupid QTE events.

>>343711104
>It came out in 2009
and I played it for the first time in ~2011
>I'm guessing you were born around 2000, and 13 was your first FF game.
Wrong.
Born late 80s, FF7 was my first, after which I played all the main-series games + some of the spinoffs like Crystal Chronicles. I still prefer XIII over some other games in the series, but it's not my very favorite.
>>
>>343711518
>I prefer the game with the laziest combat, laziest story, and laziest characters
>>
>>343711423
Not even bait. I hated that game's story so much that if it would've saddled me with a terrible battle system like XIII's instead of a reasonable one like X's I would have never beaten the game. It was actually worse than XIII in both of those regards.
>>
>>343711583
The combat was one of the greatest parts of the game. Flashy and fun take on the old and busted ATB. Of course casual, e-celeb parroting morons only ever spammed the Auto Battle button, totally missing the joys and power of manual attack combos + REPEAT function. It was also a great joy to see status effect magic actually be greatly useful; SAB & SYN combos simply owned most fights.

The story, or rather the game's lore, was super fascinating stuff. The whole "men created gods, that started ruling men, who forgot their past" elements was a total philosophical treat, delivered alongside with some delicious bio-mechanical monstrosities and tech-magic.

I can't praise the cast of XIII enough. Easily the most memorable, varied and FUN group of characters in ages, perhaps in the entire FF's history. It was also very surprising and also great to see the characters actually develop during the game; even the most annoying whiny bitch somehow turned into tolerable person, and evolved further in the sequels, becoming a total badass.

tl;dr: FFXIII was a huge positive surprise, suffering only of poor pacing and way too long dragging, too restricted beginning

Only just started playing the series a few months ago, started with IV and am on VIII now.

God Tier
V
VI

Good Tier
VII
IV

I'm on disc 2 of VIII right now. It's ok so far.
>>
>>343712850
>ONE game in ONE JRPG series consisting of 15+ parts did it well, so that totally counts!
Also V was fucking drag.
>>
>>343711423

He's not exactly wrong. I think FFX has the best combat in the series, but even then its painfully shallow. All enemies are broken up into basically 3 types. Magic, Flying or Shielded. And you switch party members based on countering these types. If there's a flying enemy, you use wakka or lulu. If its a Magic enemy, you use anyone with black magic. If its Shielded, you use Tidus or Auron to either use armor break or just pummel them. The game has about as much depth as Dragon Quest II or Earthbound.

Outside of combat, it has the dumbest story tied with FFIV.
>>
>>343713124
Status effects were also useful in IV but you didn't always have access to them.
>>
>>343713125
That's an insult to DQII, that game at least needs you to manage your resources properly or die.
>>
>>343712850

Good question.

Objectively one of the best FFs out there. Maybe it's good enough to not warrant a discussion? Because 90% when there's a thread about Final Fantasy, /v/ loves to shit on it.
