The indep route has you make friends with the Omertas, White Glove, BoS and Boomers. If these groups support you, it can only go well for you. Danke. As for radio mods, I'd check out Legends of the West and Existence 2.0. LotW plays some bluesy songs along with Frontier Town and Gunsmoke skits and 2.0 does dark ambient stuff that fits the mood surprisingly well, though I think it works better in the Capital Wasteland.

For the most part, in F1/2, you could only find Power Armor in either some old cave in the middle of nowhere, or by joining up with the Brotherhood of Steel. It was a rarity.
But in Fallout 4 Power Armor is all over the fucking place. It's like every other raider group has a heavy in Power Armor. Add that and the fact that it's now a limited use item with Fusion Cores, and Power Armor became diminished as a concept. Instead of being a rare, powerful item, it's commonplace.

the minigun is honestly one of the worst weapons in the game, especially early on, while the power armour is clunky and made redundant by backing into a house or kiting round an obstacle
hell, you could even melee it to death without needing the PA at all, with some knuckles or the sledgehammer from tenpines
