Emulation is useful, but it's used way too liberally. Emulation shouldn't be completely wiped out, it's the only way to play certain games that are no longer sold and may no longer have surviving copies. It's a good way to archive them too, so that even if physical copies eventually get data rot the game isn't lost forever.
Too many people just use them as a medium for piracy though, which should be frowned upon.

I usually try to stick to playing on the original console just out of preference, but it's a easy & fast way to play games for the most part. Also they do have the benefit of being played in HD and netplaying so I guess there's that.

If it's a classic game that I like I'll usually buy an original copy for collection's sake, but other than that I prefer emulation.
Emulation is especially useful for a game like Melee where there's mods for training or whatever, along with the ability for custom textures and music.
