What went wrong?

Hard Mode: Try to say something more than just "Microsoft"
>>
MS wasn't necessarily the problem, it was a mix of things including a complete change in the production models of the industry. Viva Pinata is still one of their best games imo.
>>
Speaking of Rare....wasn't Killer Instinct technically a Nintendo IP?
>>
Their best people left when Nintendo sold the rest of their shares
>>
Nintendo sold them. It's as much Nintendo's fault as it is Microsoft's.
>>
>>343612395
nope. It was Rares. It was released on Arcades too
>>
>>343612175
Nintendo was mad jelly of their talent. Pretty much exactly what happened to SEGA when SoJ started taking shots at SoA.
>>
>>343612175
Stamper Brothers leaving the company. Early MS Rare is not bad as people remember
>>
The majority of people who buy games changed general interests, along with the lack of consistently decent to good output that Snes to N64 Rare put out.

Also they dropped off as being the technical masters of the early 16 bit era as technology advanced from 2D into 3D.

I still prefer early to mid 360 era Rare over Snes and N64 Rare.

Rare games are honestly terrible. The only one ive ever enjoyed was banjo kazooie and conker. And they couldnt even do a proper sequel to bk, since tooie was fucking garbage and fell for le open world meme. rare is overrated
>>
The amount of marketing red tape and sabotage Nintendo did towards BFD's release was staggering, and Nintendo never acknowledged the game at all, save for a single throwaway mention in Nintendo Power, and their forced hand into retooling Dinosaur Planet to become a Starfox game mid-development is a huge dick move as a publisher to a developer, it's amazing this shit didn't cause people to walk under Nintendo, assuming they COULD walk
>>
The Stamper bros ridiculous working hours, which caused a bunch of people to quit the company. And this happened before Microsoft bought them.
>>
>>343615083
But its not open world you fucking autist
>>
New Viva Pinata when
>>
>>343615593
Its much bigger than it aught to be. and traversing giant lands of 24x24 textures blown up for the n64 back and forth sucks ass. I have never played a rare game outside of jet force gemini until I got the rare replay. the first good game I played was banjo kazooie. tooie was trash bro, trust me
>>
>>343613635
Nah, Nintendo were pissed that Rare took too long to develop games.
>>
>>343612454
Daily reminder that Iwata let them go
>>
>>343612454
They never had them, they just had a good amount of stock and published some of their games. Failing to buy them was shitty of them, though.
>>
>>343612175
If you listened to Rare's workers talk, the main thing that made their games good was the competition between dev teams, specifically Conker and BK. The two where actually in direct competition with each other before Conker decided to change course towards something more mature as later on.
>>
>>343617107
Iwata's salty grapes over the Microsoft purchase and fear of the god-awful Wii being BTFO is why he used legal bullshit to stop the Goldeneye remaster from releasing
>>
Rare only got bad under MS when they were pushed to Kinect shit.

Before then the games were still above average quality, it's just people got N&B over Threeie but that was all Rares idea. Its not a bad game but I mean, it just couldn't compete with expectations after the 2005 teaser.

60fps Perfect Dark on XBLA was a godsend though. Looking forward to Sea of Thieves
>>
>>343619878
>Rare's idea
Microsoft literally told them to shitcan Threeie and then use its assets in an unrelated open-world driving game.
>>
>>343612175
No Viva Piñata 3
>>
>>343613978
>Also they dropped off as being the technical masters of the early 16 bit era as technology advanced from 2D into 3D.

You say that, but everything RARE did in Donkey Kong Country wasn't really that special. All it was was making bitmaps from a different source. A lot of developers could do what they did.
>>
>>343620387
Source? Mayles said it was all Rares idea
>>
>banjo "10 fps" tooie
>good

no
>>
>>343612395
No because midway publishes it in the arcades, Nintendo on home consoles
>>
Most of what made Rare good had left in the middle of Perfect Dark's production. Then even more left once Microsoft bought them out. Free Radical made a pretty good trilogy (TimeSplitters) and a few other games.
>>
>>343612175
>Try to say something more than just "Microsoft"
Microsoft®
>>
>He bought into the "Rare's Microsoft games are bad" meme
Grabbed By the Ghoulies did nothing wrong.
>>
>>343612175
They still had good games after joining Microsoft, it wasn't the end of the world. They just changed their practices for some reason and it fucked them over.
>>
What's the best post-Nintendo Rare game, and why is it Kameo?
>>
The problem with Rare is that they started to take forever to develop new games at a time in the industry when pushing out a sequel in 2 years was standard.

Banjo-Tooie took 2.5 years and was clearly extremely rushed (framerate is ridiculously inconsistent - literally 10 FPS on nothing sometimes and smooth as butter on complex scenes in other places)

- Perfect Dark took 3 years to be developed, and that was only because they abandoned their original plan to make a new game engine, otherwise it would have taken even longer

-Conker was in production for like 5 years

-Jet Force Gemini took almost 3 years

Starfox Adventures/Dinosaur Planet was in production for like 4 years

Aside from the above, Rare literally had NOTHING else ready for Gamecube before 2004.
>>
>>343622002
>Rare literally had NOTHING else ready for Gamecube before 2004.
Ghoulies was released in 2003 and was originally developed for the Gamecube, before the buyout.
>>
>>343622153
Nintendo would have asked them to delay it into 2004 so it would have time to be a good game
>>
>>343622002
>Aside from the above, Rare literally had NOTHING else ready for Gamecube before 2004.

What about Donkey Kong Racing?
>>
>>343622313
confirmed for never playing the game, it's actually pretty decent, it just didn't sell well is all
>>
>>343622153
As was Kameo. It went from N64 game to GCN game to 360 launch title
>>
>tfw no jet force gemini 2, or even a fucking modern reboot.

There's gold in them thar hills!

I think it all fell apart when Nintendo forced Rare to include shitty Starfox in Dinosaur Planet. Also I'm sure Miyamoto being a spiteful Japanese cunt forced them to so that the game would fail and feel disjointed and on top of that disappoint the fans because he was super salty at DKC being better than Mario and Conker having been a success despite the fact it was rated M.

>you will never play the real Dinosaur Planet
>Kameo will never have a non-rushed remake or sequel
>Jet Force Gemini will never be re-released with the whole tribals mechanic fixed
>The Goldeneye remake is stored somewhere in a complete state and will never be released
>yooka laylee will most likely suck dick like every single other kickscammer game
>>
They were much better at making games than they were at running a business. They got an unlimited budget from Nintendo to make games because they were able to decode the Famicom, which say what you will, was not a sound business decision, and really quite lucky on their part. Then Microsoft happened.

Nothing really went "wrong", they just got as far as you could reasonably expect a company to go with good products and good luck compensating for poor capital and inexperience in business.
>>
>>343615892
>tooie was trash bro
No we will not trust you because you seem to have suffered brain damage at some point in your life to even imply BK is open world
>>
>>343623560
>backtracking and useless miles of space is ok when rare does it

Take the nostalgia goggles off kid. Just because the 64 had buttfucking nothing to play doesnt mean everything was perfect on it. bk was just the right size and didnt need to be expanded on any further.

>Hard Mode
But that's the correct answer.
Every game that they had in development which didn't try to cash in on the CoD/casual crowd was cancelled. The talent of Rareware got fed up of this and abandoned the ship.
