Kero Blaster has the spirit only on the comedy end. Literally nothing else was attempted at all. The game suffers from a few points of tedium, like the Jellyfish Jelly in Grasstown or fetching Jenka's dogs from all across Sand Zone (although this is slightly mitigated from the neat backstory Jenka gives you as you acquire them).
There's also the incredibly obtuse requirements that you need to fulfill in order to get the best ending, like ignoring your friend Booster after watching him fall from the roof of the cave you're in or going to the corner of the Core Room to find the Tow Rope.
We also can't forget the absolutely ridiculous difficulty spike that the Bloodstained Sanctuary provides. It's a good challenge to people who know the game, but everything before it is so much easier that the shift is jarring and unfair.
I love Cave Story, don't get me wrong. But if we're to discuss what went wrong, these are my thoughts.

That's actually impossible, but you must be new to video game history so I'll fill you in a bit.
Earlier game graphics being more primitive is a result of them coming out on more primitive hardware. Undertale is an 8-bit game with simple graphics because it came out ~10 years ago.
Cave Story had more computer power and a bigger budget, so Pixel was able to do full color artwork and higher quality animations.
That doesn't change the fact that Undertale was a HUGE innovator, though, so we should still respect it I think.
