Because for some reason the bulk of developers in this day and age don't know how to optimize their games in order to actually run on current platforms at full speed. Hell some of these same exact games require a beefy ass computer to run at full speed at console settings. That's the real reason why the xbone and ps4 are getting these "upgraded" versions, not to try and make 4K the standard but to try and get the devs to not make their games run like shit by compensating with more powerful versions of the consoles.
In Nintendo's case it's because Wii U is a flop that hasn't even sold like 30 million units.

Sorry, but no. The new console generation starts when any of the three companies comes out with a console to succeed one of their own consoles. The 3DS was the DS's successor and it started the 8th generation. Incorrect. Generation means time. Power means nothing. The HyperScan came out in 2006 during the 7th generation of consoles yet has the power of perhaps a 4th or 5th generation console. It's still a 7th generation system.
The DS was Nintendo's 7th gen handheld and the 3DS was the direct successor to the DS. The 3DS is therefore an 8th gen console.

After you get used to 120+ fps, even 60 is choppy as fuck. I had a 2k monitor and then I saw a game playing at 144fps on a 144hz screen, I instantly sold my 2K one and bought a 1080p/144hz monitor, and it's literally a huge improvement.
