The game has flaws for sure but how did they nail it so fucking hard with this game? I play through it every Halloween and I still feel that excitement and terror I felt back when it first was released.

it was a really good game but it isn't as good as its portrayed now.
now we are looking at it through the lens of everything since RE4 being varying degrees of disappointment. just the same as resident evil was after 1 or 2 depending on what your first was.

Pretty much this. The bosses, the level design, hell even the graphics hold up with texture mods.
Game does so many things right. Enemy placements. Ramping you into things. Unique segments like the maze. It's not too hard but challenging your first few play throughs. No bullshits. Lots of little things like flash grenades instantly killing the plagas things. Amazing game.

It's still well-liked because it's a very good game, not because the following Resident Evils were not as good.
