A story that went off the rails and then at the end expects you to take it seriously (honestly, MGS2 would be better without the Arsenal Gear bullshit)

3 would have been ok if it didn't force you into a menu every 10 mins to change camo, micro manage equipment, eat and/or heal. That is as well as constant codecs.

level design is great but as a stealth game in most areas you can just speed run to the exit.
Like every MGS game it didn't live up to it's gameplay trailers so things like climbing trees, hunting and eating were all just gimmicks in the end.

I split the MGS series into two categories
Good Vibe Games and 'What The Fuck Am I Playing?' Games.
For me MGS1 and MGS3 would be in the former and MGS2 and MGS5 would be in the latter. MSGS4 hovered in between from memory.
And as for MSG2, Big Shell is the worst setting in the entire series. It's repetitive and boring. And you play as Raiden. And all your codec contacts are boring and naggy too.
I would rate 2 my least favorite, but I'll give kudos Kojima for taking the risks he did with it, they just didn't pan out for me.

3 and 2 are both very good, just in different areas
2 has very tight, arcade-y stealth gameplay, basically MGS1's but a lot more polished
3's gameplay is a more traditional 3rd person stealth shooter, but a very good one
2's story has a genuine and complex theme and message and while the execution isn't great Kojima's efforts here should be commended
3's story is just a fun James Bond-esque spy story. While it does have its own themes and messages, it's more about over-the-top entertainment than anything else, and there's nothing wrong with thatOf course, whenever I mention MGS3 I'm talking about the Subsistence version, because the original Snake Eater release with the bird's eye camera is terrible, purely because of the camera

It took everything 1 did well and turned it to 11, while having the ridiculous meta narrative and the conversations that are in the codec are scarily accurate to what is actually happening right now.
3 is still alright but 2 is a literal video game masterpiece, I would probably say it's one of the top 5 games that have ever been made.

I've got over 50 playthroughs in both games and it's not even a question, MGS2's gameplay shits all over 3's to the point where Kojima should be ashamed of how much of a downgrade it is.
First off it's slow as shit. Your movement speed feels like barely a third of what it is in MGS2.
Second it's RIDICULOUSLY EASY ON ANY DIFFICULTY. The only way you are going to get a challenge out of MGS3 is if you do some retarded self imposed handicap. The AI in 3 is so fucking braindead it's shocking. MGS2's enemies were far more challenging on all difficulties. 2's level design and patrol patterns forced you to really nail the execution if you didn't want a bad situation to develop. 3 you can just lay down in grass wearing green and headshot everyone from 5 miles away.
Level design is a joke in 3. There's no focus, there doesn't seem to have been any thought put into enemy placement, and most of the levels are a literal hallway as most of the game you're just progressing straight forward through the environment like some shitty JRPG.
the only thing I can say 3 legitimately did better was boss battles and the combat. Even then the combat is too easy, blasting your way through the game is a legitimate option, in 2 that shit would have gotten you killed very quickly.

Once you realize that in 3 you pretty much go forward in a linear fashion, it's kinda bad. You only go back once, and there are only a couple of open areas that you have to explore, like the endgame factory, the scientist building and the part where you rescue sokolov. Plus the Camo/Firstaid shit while sounded great, it got boring after an hour.
2's level desing was a lot better. Fuck swimming tho. 2 also had more good bossfights, the only good bossfight in 3 is The Boss and The End, rest are bad.
