I got this game recently, and I've been having a blast, but i noticed that i have been levelling up really slowly. I'm at the quest where you have to get the dwemer puzzle box, and I'm only level 1. I've been doing a bunch of the fighters guild side quests as well, but i just haven't levelled up yet. Am I doing something wrong?

Levelling up your Major Skills will level you up the fastest, and you still need to sleep in a bed to actually level up when you gain a level.

You level up by mastering your major and minor skills. Quests don't do jack shit to your overall level.

You don't level up by killing monsters and completing quests like in most RPGs. In TES, you need to use your skills in order to acquire experience. That means you need to either use your abilities often, or you need to go to a trainer and pay them so you can get a skill points immediately.
If you want to level up fast, I recommend getting a lot of gold and powertraining for a while.

The games leveling system is busted as fuck. Basically you level up by increasing your skills which depending on what you chose may or may not be things that you use regularly. It's entirely possible to make a character that gets fairly powerful but never levels beyond 1 and honestly it's not a bad way to do it because your level cap is going to be higher if you choose useless stats that you keep low at character creation rather than trying to select major and minor skills you have bonuses to. In fact part of the charm of the game is just how ridiculously busted everything is. It's entirely possible to walk out into the world after character creation and create a spell that will raise any and all of your attributes permanently by 100. Your skills will still be stuck at low levels but you'll be so ridiculously powerful that everything will always succeed anyway.
I never got further than Balmora despite going back to try and play it once a year.
Everyone says it's so good and I'm trying to understand why, but I fucking hate the game. I barely set foot in Balmora before it gives me insane quests like pickpocket a guy in the middle of a crowded bar with everyone looking at me.

Security is pointless if you are going to main Alteration. Choose a weapon skill in that place (Long Blade for example since you have no Strength related skills and it's fairly popular type of weapon).
>Minor Skills
Illusion is kinda bad in my opinion. You can acquire pretty powerful Chameleon artifact early in game so there is no need of mastering invisibility and chameleon spells. You can also enchant an item with Night Eye.
You are lacking Endurance skill so you could take Heavy/Medium Armor or Spear instead of Illusion (unless you don't give a fuck about maximizing your level ups).
