In the first 15 years (1987-2002), there were 14 titles released with the Final Fantasy name (excluding rereleases , anime, etc).
In the next 15 years (2003-2016) there have been 44 titles released with Final Fantasy in the name.

There's more like 120 games with the FF name if you count all the spin offs, sequels and prequels. FFVII alone has like 7 games. And then there's all the renamed games like Legends and Adventure.

How hipster do you have to be to actually believe this? Sure FF was popular. Sure, it isn't the most complex JRPG out there. The games weren't bad though. No one did the "same thing but better". Most JRPG's had their very own formula to make them a different experience, and the same was true for FF.

They weren't particularly good either. They were mediocre. Which brings me back to the point that made you mad. You can find examples of things FF tried to do that were done better in other series.

Well this doesn't really have to do with the point your arguing against. But when it comes to the FF formula, its 'formula' is actually that it tries to reinvent the formula every game. Which ends up having mixed results every time. And leads to alienating its own fanbase. Someone who likes FFIV or VII probably won't like FFVI or VIII. Because they completely dumped the concepts they liked to make something new.

FF being good is part of the "cultural mainstream". FF being bad isn't based around any facts, and is just a prevalent trend that doesn't seem to want to go anywhere. To be honest, the last FF game that I had hype was Final Fantasy 3 remake. Heroes of the Light and FF15 got me for awhile but then I ignored them

Now I'm more into SMT and DQ games since they are more faithful with their roots
