Im sure it will get better once I get reflect, dodge, and some other tools to keep the pace up while not getting blown up, but for now I'm just baiting enemies into either whiffing, or getting blocked then air comboing, or running into a group of Shadows and spamming fire.

Unless you're a speedrunning autist the sword is OBJECTIVELY the worst choice for Sora. You get the better and more useful abilities early on when you pick shield or staff. Picking sword first gets you useless shit like dodge roll a bit earlier

I don't know if you know, but the pirates are super weak to magic. Blizzard completely freezes them, and lightning and fire do a ton of bonus damage. You can easily stunlock any of them, even Barbosa.

I know. I was stuck on the part with the pirate ship and getting the medallion, in the first visit. I believe I only had fire, I'm pretty sure. The environment was also difficult since they can only be attacked at night, and someone is hur hur hurring right behind me. It was early on my first run on level 1, I guess I wasn't playing that smart in the beginning.

Huh? Well Critical Mode halves your HP, so you only ever have 60HP. Enemies nearly one shot you or do it real quick in a combo, leaving you dead since it is impossible to obtain the specific abilities to give you a second chance. Ha, a pun. It's pretty fun and very challenging.

Oh, that's more like it then. I always liked optional glass cannon modes in this kind of shit. Sometimes makes the game a lot better actually. It's the opposite of when they make harder difficulties shit like "oh yeah it's the same shit except every enemy is a bullet sponge now".
Kinda reminds me of in 20XX (Mega Man X as a roguelite, basically), the game has "skulls", which are just options that you can turn on to make the game harder without any sort of bonus. I always turn on the one that speeds up enemy attack patterns, because even though it makes some enemies harder, it makes the game more fun because you spend less time waiting for shield enemies to unguard in platform-heavy areas. Shit like that.

Oh right, well that I guess can be something like in the game. I'm not sure if it's a well-known glass cannon, but the entire premise of of a level 1 Kingdom Hearts 2 FM is run is essentially built all around the idea of that.
A highlighted example is a boss called Marluxia who puts a death counter on Sora, and any hits with his scythe according to your level will knock the counter down, and since you only have 1 level you're dead in one hit. Using a reaction such as webm related would give you back death counters, but since you're on level 1 counter that's useless. That's where his second reaction command comes useful and if you catch it you do insane damage.
Fighting a boss named Axel has you over a pit of fire at all times depleting your HP unless you're in the air or you knock him down with his reaction command.
There are certain keyblades and play with actions that turn you into an unbeatable powerhouse while always on the brink of sudden death.
Games are a lot more fun like that, I agree. The more options the merrier.
