The combat in KOTOR is too much like a pen and paper RPG (dice rolls) and there are math puzzles, which aren't necessarily bad in their own right, but math isn't intuitive. If you don't remember algebra and trigonometry from high school, you either have to look up the solutions or solve the puzzles with violence (dark side). I played the game for the first time earlier in the year and didn't look solutions up, but I actually had to review those subjects like I was about to be given an exam and remember thinking how fucking lame that felt.
KOTOR is a good game, no doubt, but DA:O is better.

It got me really hooked on the RPG genre. I pirated knew nothing about it, expecting something like Jedi Academy. At first I was pissed off as the game seemed like shit, movement didn't feel like Jedi Acadamy at all, can't even jump, the graphics are uglier, wtf is going on. However the more I played, the more I liked it, couldn't pry myself away from the PC by the end of the day.
I have Kotor to thanks for making me try out other games like Fallout, Arcanum, Bloodlines, Deus Ex, Neverwinter Nights and all that good shit.

Aesthetically I like Tatooine. But it has the worst missions. Kill Sand niggers here kill sand niggers there. There's the swoop track but who cares about that shit. Then it ends with you just getting the Star Map and not even fighting the Krayt Dragon. Slight bonus points for HK.
At least Dantooine has some interesting missions like the family fued, the murder mystery and the persuade battle with Juhani. But minus points for Juhani because she's a crap character.

It starts out a bit slow but gets much better as you progress. There's only one thing to keep in mind, on the first planet try to stay as low level as possible, under no circumstance level past 5.
You'll become a jedi right after and the saved levels will translate into more jedi powers and funner combat for the rest of the game.

This is a shitty waste of a post but if you're gonna bring up the Witcher, I want to say how similar I found the first game and KOTOR. The dialogue system is identical and the combat has a similar turn based feel and flashy choreography.

I don't think so. Finishing Taris at lv5 is no trouble at all either, and depending on your class you could easily finish it at lv2.
Just save up some grenades for the very last segment and you're golden.
If you level up too much you will only be able to max out 2-3 skills later.

If you want to play a d20-style game, the Baldur's Gate series (especially BG2) will offer you a superior experience.
If you want to play a space opera, Mass Effect (especially Mass Effect 2) is again an improvement on KOTOR.
And this is just looking at Bioware's track record. KOTOR is the best Star Wars game ever made but it's aged poorly, more so than the other two games I've mentioned anyway.

Yes. Writing is excellent, story is conventional but well-told, with a decent twist near the end.
Combat is decent, but unless you're constantly micromanaging all three party members, it can get overly simple.
Graphics are great for 2003.
