Well yeah, it was a great fucking processor. It's a shame that Cell isn't mass produced (other than for rare video transcode cards and TVs). Someone asked a Sony rep why they didn't use Cell again and the guy said it was because the Cell was too hard to program for, which makes a lot of sense desu.

it is superior but you have to think of it in time sense. people were more OK with waiting for the raw processing power of current machines to eventually just speed up and for the individual lighting, shading engines etc to be optimized more than just use a processor that was incredible FOR ITS TIME

Cell is just the processor. All the graphics grunt work was done by something like a severely updated PS1/PS2 GPU, as in it had similar ISA, but just more powerful.
At the end if the day, the RSX was the downfall of the console.

Most games really aren't that CPU-intensive any more. When Sony was consulting with devs on what to put in the PS4, the top thing was that the major devs wanted a way better graphics card and didn't give a shit about the CPU.
Really says a lot about the state of the games industry. A better CPU can open up new gameplay doorways, allow better, more complex physics, do all sorts of things. A better GPU is better graphics. Game companies don't make games, they make shiny turds, because fucking morons look at the shiny turds and think "wow, it's so shiny" and shove the turd down their throat without so much as taking a sniff.

This is also part of why the Xbone is """"weaker"""" than the PS4. It actually isn't. It has a better CPU than the PS4. Only problem is that devs don't give a shit about that sort of thing. They only care about the graphics. So the Xbone gets shoved over to one side because it was actually a better game console, it didn't overly focus on the graphics like the PS4 did.
