This is only the case for incompetent developers like, say, modern Bethesda.
Games that understand the concept of linear warriors vs. quadratic wizards where endgame spellcasting is a beast are always fun.
FF1 Black Mage is the most pimping mage in all of vidya. Just look at how he grips his robes with confidence. Just look at those glowing yellow eyes beaming with determination and intelligence. Just look at him. He is what all mages should aspire to.

Also I forgot to mention you can do this in full dragon plate armor while wielding a holy silver sword that makes demons explode into fire and you can raise your charisma and fuck succubi raw and actually drain them of power instead of them draining you for free levels

The vast majority of that can be done with wands, scrolls or rings as opposed to actual wizardry. Hungerless casting is worth it though.
