You don't need to fuck with the IRS much to get them thirsty. Racketeering, financial fraud, on top of tax evasion usually gets you pretty fucked if you aren't fortune 500.

Who would be gullible enough to think that funding Psychonauts 2 and shit like that would make them more money than they put in? Then again, this is Schafer's third god-damn kickstarter so fool me twice.

Kickstarting has, by far, been the biggest scam in the past 5 years in the digital media. I know nobody here will detest that statement, but can anyone tell me good things that have come out of kickstarter?
I'm genuinely curious.

I'm still waiting on Kickstarter to do something about the guy who abandoned his project two years ago. I file complaints every so often (cause they only allow you to file them like twice a year) and nobody has ever contacted me about it. Not even a courtesy response to show they're looking into my problem. And there's no email or phone number to get into touch with them, only the website complaint form.

They don't want to punish failed projects or scams cause it makes them look bad. Just stay away.

The list ends with Shovel knight. Kikestarter might be good for shit that's easier to produce. But things with unknown levels of cost like video game development, it's almost always going to end up being a scam and failure because if a person is competent enough to make a video game, then for the most part, they'd have been picked up by a company.

Tim Schaffer should have been a giant red flag.

I personally liked Wasteland 2 a lot, Divinity was less my type of game but very good as well and there's great hopes for the sequel. Shantae looks fucking amazing even though it took forever to come out, Shovel Knight was brilliant. Darkest Dungeon I haven't played and I've heard mixed stuff about it, but it's a product that looks like I'd love, and it's out, finished, and potentially good.
>>
>>343338140
I have, though I admit it's been awhile. What's the relevant info? I know they don't have to refund my money and I've never expected it, it was only 60 bucks like 4 years ago. But I'm pretty sure they're still supposed to do something about abandoned projects.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not back-pedaling or arguing that these aren't good games, but besides yooka-laylee, I haven't seen anything that challenges the """""""purpose""""""" of kickstarter. I'd like to see more genre-breaking games that are worthy of having others put a cut of their money in to see the final product, but, in my opinion, most games I've seen have something completely identical to some other indie game devs work that they made in their basement over the weekend (without all the polish). I do love me some Shovel Knight though.
>>
>>343338412
They don't.

>Creators are responsible for their projects. When you back a project, you're trusting the creator to do a good job, so if you don't know them personally or by reputation, do a little research first. Kickstarter doesn't evaluate a project's claims, resolve disputes, or offer refunds — backers decide what's worth funding and what's not.

If you have a problem and you can't resolve it with the project owner, a class action lawsuit is often the only way to get anything done.
>>
>>343338572
I haven't actually given them any money yet.
>>
>>343339031
Going into the IRS is such a creepy experience. There's always just 3 people jammed in a back room of a big empty building who hate their lives and don't give a damn at all about you being there. Had to wait for my ticket to be called when there was only one other person there.

I don't get it, you signed a thing promising them the money when they actually get their legal shit sorted out? I can't imagine they'll let investors just walk away with their money without a real clause.

Even a person with basic understanding of game sales and the metrics they provided with their own calculator would understand that Psychonauts 2 needs to perform _BEYOND REASONABLE EXPECTATIONS_ before you make a penny.

Game dev is a highly risky speculative "investment" to begin with.

I put that in the forefront because people don't know how to read and will only take the first couple of words to make an assumption on the rest of the post while I'll I'm trying to do is reach a convention of understanding with others and acknowledge that the products made had been enjoyable in one way or another. Kickstarter is still a scam so long as people continue putting in money to indulge in these lame experiences that offer nothing new when that's ideally what a kickstarter campaign should be doing.
>>343339902
Yeah, and I think Divinity is a good game. It just doesn't present an experience that you couldn't indulge yourself in from the many other turn-based RPG's.

As stated about 4 times; I don't see the idea of kickstarter as a bad thing, nor the games as bad, What I'd like to see is people with ideas like (forgive me) Five Nights At Freddy's where conventions are thrown out and the developer is experimenting with new ideas. Genre's are in the process of expiring and it's time for some new experiences to come around that challenge players in new and interesting ways.

I don't feel intensely strong about this argument and I'm more just entertaining the topic of discussion.
>>
>>343341316
Tumblrkin and the rest of his audience can't say anything bad about him because he dislikes people they also dislike.
>>
>>343341316

Not only did they trust him, but when he had the gall to turn around and literally ask for another 3.3(check out the goal), they gave him 3.8.
