What are some JRPGs with dark/realistic atmosphere? Pic related is all I can think of.
>>
In before some idiot says FFVII is realistic.
>>
>>343295112
Other than SMTs, Parasite Eve maybe. Well, as realistic as pseudo-biology may be, at least. It's quite dated, mind.
>>
IB4 Earthbound
>>
Shadow Hearts, Koudelka and Vagrant Story. Mind you, there are still some retarded designs present.
>>
>>343295112
dark souls series
>>
Why do people want realism in RPGs? A great part of their appeal is they aren't real. If you want 'realism' in a game, you have endless western movie games or simulation games.
>>
>>343296250
It's more immersive. Realistic RPGs can still have supernatural and out there elements but the difference is you can imagine yourself in that setting.

Just how many RPGs that use realistic settings? Only a few between, and that's the appeal, to play something that's unusual (setting) in your usual genre (in this case, RPG).
>>
I wouldn't call SMT realistic. It's just dark and gritty, but not without humor sprinkled in. The other big thing is it's more about the world than the individual characters. So I guess Souls would be close to what you're looking for.

>RPGs made in Japan aren't JRPGs
Say you want turn based combat then you faggot.

Think he means JRPG set in the "real world".
>>
If you use the dark fantasy art, I'd say Stranger of Sword City qualifies

Go play superior western RPGs instead
>>
>>343296820
Oh, that makes sense. The fantasy in SMT builds off the modern world mostly. I can't think of many RPGs that do that while having a generally dark atmosphere though. They're pretty unique games in that sense.

I don't really know what OP is smoking calling SMT1 realistic but I know I like its jank-ass version of 90s Japan where I step out of the house with a computer strapped to my arm and threaten and beat up yakuza with my bare hands while fetching coffee from the shopping arcade
>>
>I WANT REALISM
Fuck off. You assholes already ruined fps and now move on to rpgs? Fuck you

Seconding Koudelka (prequel to Shadow Hearts series) and Shadow Hearts. Especially Koudelka. That game is amazing in so many ways.
>>
Why doesn't the west have any interest in urban fantasy? Imagine an RPG with a similar setting as The Master and Margarita.

Isn't that what Low Fantasy / Contemporary Fantasy is, strictly speaking?

>>343297000
I can think of Bloodlines The Masquerade off the top of my head. There's probably some others too.
>>
>>343299675
Why do weebs always refer to the west as this single entity they're not a part of?
>>
Why are western RPGs always tolkien fantasy?
>>
>>343300469
Because you only play entry level AAA shit. Now give me 5 good japanese Wizardry clones.
>>
>>343300469
The reason, quite frankly, is because there's no talent in the industry. They'd like you to think that they do it because it's what people want, but the real truth is that they are unable to make anything original, only derivative shit.
>>
>>343300741
name 5 good WRPGs in modern day setting
>>
>>343300256

Why do people refer to anyone who makes stupid statements about the west being 'weebs'? Western gaming fans make some of the dumbest generalizations of their own games.
>>
>>343300469

They're not all tolkien. But there's only about 4 genres the west is willing to use.
>>
>>343300184
Bloodlines is Western though, isn't it?
>>
>>343299246
If you've ever played SMT, OP very obviously doesn't actually mean realistic like military FPS realistic. He just means the setting should be based in "real" modern times with fantasy building off of that.
>>
>>343301196
Shadowrun (sorta), VtMB, Deus Ex, Alpha Protocol, Fallout.
>>
>>343300469
I wasn't aware that spaceships were "Tolkein fantasy".
>>
>>343302879
You should probably replace Fallout with VTM:Redemption since Fallout is more post apocalyptic sci-fi.
>>
>>343303167
They are, actually, if you read Silmarillion.
>>
>>343303185
And also uses 1950s aesthetic.
>>
>>343303713
Not really though. Fallout 1 and 2 have more of a mad max feel and you see some glimpses of raygun gothic architecture in prewar buildings.

Dragon Quarter. Humans basically live underground and the main story involves you trying to reach the surface.
>>
>>343296754
That image isn't true anymore.

WRPGs go out of their way to make their characters big, burly, ugly as sin, and even an extra effort to cover up their bodies. It's strangely prudish until you realize that WRPGs have actual sex scenes in them whereas JRPGs go out of their way to make sure nothing canon ever actually happens relationship-wise until either the ending or the sequel game.

It's like they've become games made for horny perverts that are still scared of sex, but they resolve it in the opposite way. One game hides it until you work for it, and the other game teases but never delivers.
