You can run through RE2 (and most others) in less than 2 hours when you know what you're doing. It's pretty typical survival horror game thing tho'.
However, what the games lack in the actual length (I doubt any first-timer will run through it in less than 4 hours, minimum), they usually pay back in replay-value and unlockables.

ironically, back in the late 90s, games like RESI and MGS were slightly criticized for being so short, as in beatable in a single weekend.

Game is actually the easiest in the series. I no saved speedrunned it once but only after numerous tries. The part I almost always died at were the plants at the end.
Even first timers shouldn't have too much of a problem unless they can't comprehend tank controls and static camera which is sadly too many people.
You never consider that the main boss of re2 is essentially a sexual molester and even took his own daughter's virginity....technically and then you have to abort the "baby"

Its length is perfect for what it tries to do, though.
Going from Raccoon streets to Umbrella's labs for the first time is quite the ride, the game is full of memorable moments.

I don't fucking know, the re1 remake looks fucking stupid to me, with the characters being so detailed you expect them to move better instead of worse, the animations are stupidly floaty and they aren't responsive at all, meanwhile in RE2 they start running immediately when you tell them to, It's hard enough with the tank controls, but the remake totally kills it for me.

There's no debate, they are different sides of the same coin, both games depict a escape from Raccoon, it all boils down to what you feel like playing first.
With that said, I liked Extreme Battle more than Mercs, though.
First (two) time(s) for the atmosphere.
Subsequent playthroughs for the speedrunning. Makes sense to me, that's how RE games typically went.
