Grid-based, turned based movement makes the gameplay tactical. If you don't think you each action, you will lose.

Permanent death makes you take your choices seriously and allows you to experience growth in a real way as you learn the game, not from just grinding you way to victory. Also contributes heavily to immersion (being near death 10 hours deep into nethack/brogue feels more frightening and intense than any horror game)

Randomization of layout, enemies, and item names requires you to think and adapt each time you play. If one game of Nethack, a blue potion could be healing, in your next game of Nethack a blue potion could be paralysis, so you have to deduce how things work each time which helps to make the experience stay fresh.

Ascii graphics allow the game to present far more options than games with more complex graphics. In Nethack if you need to cross a river to make it to the next staircase, you can zap a wand of cold at the floor to turn the water into ice. You can summon a hill giant to fight you, and trick it into throwing boulders near the water so you can push them in and build a bridge. You can polymorph yourself into a flying creature or mount a flying creature to get across. Or you can simply use a pickaxe and dig through the floor. The complexity is unmatched.

Sounds interesting. I like playing Skyrim with Requiem and perma death sometimes, but playing a game with such minimalistic graphics must be kinda odd.

I'm currently working on my R-Typer difficult 1cc.
Already have 70 hours in the game and aquired all ships.
With R-9 Leo I can get to the last level already.

The game is awesome, but it could have been much much better. The main problem with it is the horrendous in some parts (especially in stage 3 and 4). I think the devs pushed the hardware limits a bit too much, that's probably also why the pacing is so slow (even for an R-type game) and sometimes there are a bit too less enemies around.
