Why do Megaman characters always pose with their fingers like this?

2 in the stink
1 in the brink
Maybe their hands hurt?

Many western cartoon characters have traditionally had three fingers plus a thumb, to simplify hand shape. This includes some animated Astro Boy, as Tezuka drew direct inspiration from Western cartoons like the ones put out by Disney. However, most Japanese cartoons have characters with four fingers plus a thumb, because "missing" fingers are associated with organized crime. As early Megaman art was essentially Astro Boy fanart, the compromise of a four fingered palm separated into three portions emerged, and this carried on as a visual flourish throughout the series.

He doesn't say exactly what the "bad cultural meaning" is, but looking for that separately you'll hear about the Yakuza association. He also doesn't directly reference Megaman 1's origins as am Astro Boy product, but again you can find that if you look separately.
