They really need a return to form. They've been stuck in this fucked up Apple phase since 2006. They don't need gimmicks, they just need good games. If they want NX to sell well, it needs to be a strong console, have a solid launch lineup and a good selection of upcoming games, as well as solid third-party exclusives. I doubt it'll even have one of those things though, and it'll probably just be Wii U 2.0, when it needs to be at least Gamecube-tier.
Nintendo used to be ahead of the curve in terms of innovation.
The DS tapped into touch screens several years before smartphones.
The Wii tapped into waggle, which caused other competitors to try and jump at it.
Look at the 3DS and Wii U though. Both were reacting to other market changes, rather than leading their own way. The 3DS was trying to cash in on the 3D fad, which wasn't that big of a thing in the first place, and has practically already died, while the Wii U was trying to break into the tablet market, but with Apple and Android already having their footholds, there was no way for them to squeeze in.
Basically, the NX needs to do something wholly original. That's what led them to success in the past.

Z-targeting is an ingenious and eloquent solution to real-time 3D combat. You could stafe, skip around your opponent, block, parry, backflip, use an item from your inventory - all without it ever becoming confusing.
