Personally I like the Steam Controller quite a bit, but it's use is limited and won't get you far if you plan to play every game with it. Currently playing Resident Evil 4 with it.
If you were planning to get a wired connection with the Steam link, it's good. If you're not going wired it's abysmal.
It's a tossup.

Literally everything else about it is the best though. 360 controller with DS3 d-pad would be the perfect controller.
I bought the steam link on launch, absolutely fantastic as long as you hardwire it. Using it with Wi-Fi is awful though.
I also got a controller during the sale. A friend brought one over, and while I hated it at first, once I learned how easy it is to reprogram and apply community button profiles, I quickly changed my mind. Plus it's super easy to swap between using it on the link and your desktop proper.

The steam controller is a weird beast. It works well if you send time tweaking the fuck you of it. But if you aren't the kind of person who loves tinkering with your setup and configurations I'd avoid it.

Because the steam link can connect any computer on your LAN to your tv, and accept several USB pads/kb/mouse, and accept most xinput Bluetooth pads.
