There is no way to go solo unless you enjoy getting bullied by 12yo and his 10yo friends every single day and losing all your loot.
Nah there really isn't a way to effectively solo unless you just luck out and find a fully geared player at low health and even then you're just going to get killed when you log out anyway. No way in hell you could defend a base on your own.

Yeah, it's not that hard. Find a dense forest, build a basic 2x2x2 house, lock it from inside with a bed placed, and jump to get out/die to get back in. After that's set up I just sneak around upgrading shit until I have a gun or crossbow.

Rust servers eventually turns into fortresses with scoped sniper rifle camping, the fun part is building bases and scavenging resources while fighting others trying to do the same.

I didn't get big into RUST because I died after anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours in. One time I actually got as far as having a few dozen materials and some clothing, and then some Russian guys came up and shot me

If playing solo, the challenge is building a stone-wall shack with a furnace and a sleeping bag.
After that you're usually pretty safe to go farm BP's.
My greatest achievement was solo building an armored keep atop a tall rock that was almost impossible to jump up, with two layers of stone walls and spikes surrounding it with multiple protective toolsheds that went unmolested for a solid week. After it was eventually looted I just sort of stopped playing.
Not ragequit, I just knew I had made the probably the toughest possible fort but it was still eventually plundered by somebody with lots of explosives.
When the best strategy is to forget forts entirely and just plonk down a sleeping bag in a bush immediately and keep a few stashes in the area around it, the point of the game is undermined somewhat - any fort tough enough to stand up to more than a patient player with a mere bow will end up looking incredibly conspicuous and will only attract more continuous attempts anyway.
And even if you've got the means to craft decent guns and plentiful ammo you're invariably going to die if faced with a group of two players, and I will never trust teamups with randoms; every other person you run into is actively trying to distract you or to get your guard down in some way.

It was really dumb but I had a good laugh about it anyway. My friend talked me into buying it to play it with a group when the patch drops. I have no idea what I'm actually in for.
I usually hate this genre, but I find it really interesting to look at from a social experiment perspective.

The biggest fun i've ever had was building a wooden shack in the middle of the forest and gathering resources.
After i got into a group and we built this gigantic metal monstrosity with stone walls surrounding it and kept raiding players after they went sleep, it just became boring and generic.

Small community servers are the best.
You can go solo on them if you really want but I actually don't see why youd play this if you didn't have friends to play it with. Game is designed around lots of people gather resources to build the endgame shit. It was easily worth 20 dollars but I only play it with friends.

Rust is a game with much potential.
BUT HOLY FUCK HOW THEY HAVENT GOT THEY PRIORITIES RIGHT!
They're also working so slowly it's crazy, adding 1 new item every weeks, focusing on the graphical side of the game.
One of the dev is working full time on.. Throwable item. Yep. Pointless functionality that is not precise and therefore nobody will use. Fuck them for destroying the potential of their own games.

The fun moments will be few and far between.
Also the game favors big teams heavily. So if you play alone, it will be only bullying, if you play with 1-4 friends, it will be a waste of time and turn into some shitty grinding.
The largest clans only focus on killing weaker players and raiding big bases when everyone goes to sleep these days, they don't even gather stuff anymore. So this forces you and your group to basically do the same exact thing and the entire game boils down to this.
Building a small shack in the middle of nowhere and just living isn't really an option anymore. The survival aspect is more or less gone.

Blueprints. You need these BPs to able to manufacture your own items when you need them.
But Rust simply isn't for playing solo. The game advertises itself as a survival game but it's actually just a shooter where you craft and build shit.
