Only played 4 and 5. Decent action games and 4's opening sequence being swarmed by villagers is probably the most stressed out a game has ever made me.
Actually saw a thread some days back and feel like replaying it for the 25th time, but:

RE4 is the Army of Darkness to Resident Evil 1's Evil Dead.
RE1 tried to be serious horror, but it came off like an unintentionally goofy D-list movie with awful acting from start to finish. It wasn't really there in either horror or action despite giving you more than enough guns and ammo to kill everything twice over.
RE2 was the one properly serious entry, better acting, more content, it was also way more action focused in comparison to 1. There wasn't much about it that came off as silly, and it probably was fairly understated in having some of the most horrific aspects of the series. Where later games had more randomly grotesque blobs and creatures, 2's monsters were very creepy or fearsome.
RE3 was the real point where the series went full blown action and was just throwing out whatever, the only limitation being the series was still on PS1 and had to stick to tank controls with static camera angles. It went a step further with Code Veronica, but still wasn't quite there. About as action-y, but WAY more goofy.
RE4 was the full 3D realization of the action RE3 was aiming for, and it deliberately mimicked the goofy feel of RE1. But in playing up the camp, it was the Army of Darkness of the series. But fuck the frequent QTE standard it established.
RE5 was where the series wanted to get SERIOUS again. Whether or not it intended to do so, it more accurately captured the goofy feel of the original such as with performances by megalomaniac super villain Albert Wesker. RE5 was the unintentional successor to RE1 in terms of coming off like a humorously bad movie.
And then RE6 went full blown serious and all out action. Played virtually everything straight, anything silly that happened was intentional and the cast would crack an almost expected deadpan joke at it. The lot of them were all veterans of horrific shit going on, so none of it phased them. Fucking great combat mechanics, it was really just "Mercenaries: Ignore the Campaign".

Pretty good for what it is but I prefer survival horror RE and its successors fucked the formula with multiplayer. I know it's an unpopular opinion but friends do not make RE better.

I didn't like 5 much at all. The pacing was jank and it was balls to the wall action almost all the time, not to mention the obvious focus on multiplayer. Desperate Escape was even worse, but I did like Lost In Nightmares in part because it was a change of pace.
