Its a game that vastly improved Tactical gameplay and UI. So much so, the game is actually too easy. Aside from that, it has a very Suikoden feel in its focus on anime cliches and war/politics. Its not going to overtake Suikoden I-III in quality of writing, but its definitely still worth playing.
The cel shaded style is also amazing.

As was Suikoden. Doesn't make it bad. Both Suikoden and VC took common anime troupes and did something new with them. That's what makes them stand out compared to say a Tales or Key game.

VC is a fun and fairly unique strategy rpg somewhat hampered by generic anime clichés nailed onto a genuinely interesting diesel(Ragna?)punk setting. It has some internal balance issues because scouts are highly mobile and have rifles that are accurate out to a medium range, making them more effective at offense than the ostensible storm troopers.

3 was ok but by that point they had fully let Raita off his leash so the designs are full retard and animmeeee, and it's basically retreading the same war was game 1 but from a different perspective
