I almost always take Jaheira and Aeire as party members because of Insect Plague and cleric spell sequencers respectively, but I don't like either of them all that much. Jaheira is a bitchy whore and Aerie is a self-obsessed snowflake. Viconia is a rude cunt but she does at least have some funny banter.
Meanwhile Imoen has the best banter lines yet never comes across as arrogant.

Imoen is great, which is funny considering she was a throw away character.
They added her last minute in BG1 because they realized the only thief available in the beginning of the game was Montaren the evil halfling that forced you to take Xar and turn down Khalid and Jaheria. She turned out to have fantastic stats, being the best thief in the game and easy to dual into mage for even better times.
They planned to actually kill her off in the second game, but when they saw how popular she was they changed their mind and changed the script up a bit.

Kensai get a bonus to damage and to hit, meaning that they feel a good deal stronger than they are when you dual them over since their Thac0 is already several levels above where it should be.
Mages can't wear most armor in order to use their abilities, which is fine since Kensai can't use armor anyway. Despite this though, Kensai can use wizard robes so they actually get better after dualing over. You end up with a powerful character that can fight well while also casting spells, offensively and defensively.
Another good combo is Kensai-Thief. Thieves gain xp faster to get your Kensai levels back, and once you get Use Any Item it removes almost all downsides of being a Kensai. Them you can go and use Kai with Assassination or Backstab to do 5x your max hit every attack.

You could use the tweak pack to make it so NPCs don't try to kill yourself if you want.
Technically might be cheating though and it is good to take different NPC's occasionally too.
Keldorn is hard not to bring along though since he is an Inquisitor. Carsomyr breaks everything, despite him needing dexterity gauntlets and a giant belt. All those Truesights and Dispells are nice too.

It's suggested that some pretty dark shit happened to her while she was in Spellhold, and it's clear that the MC and her had sex (assuming the player made the right choices).
It's nowhere near flawless, but in terms of writing quality it's much better than 90% of the mods out there.

He's not bad actually. A blade is a bit like a thief-fighter-mage. Offensive Spin is quite handy, doing 1 extra attack, 2 extra to hit and damage and making all attacks do max damage for 4 full rounds. Have him dualwield and he can get about 4 attacks per round that way, which isn't terrible. Then he gets to benefit from things like Blurr, Mirrior Image, Stoneskin and Tensar's transformation. He also has some good natural resistances and an illegally high Short Swords skill for a Bard at 2 dots.
Since he's a Bard he gets Thief high level abilities too, including spike traps and Use Any Item. Overall, he's not actually a bad character.

I didn't hate her personality but after you save Imoen there are ZERO reasons to keep her imo. Fuck, even before rescuing imoen Jan can do everything she can, and much more. He is actually interesting and you can make him useful unlike a couple other companions. Some of the mod kits for newer rulings make him extremely capable in battle. Also, if you are a bard, micromanaging the theater is one of the more entertaining Keep Quest series
As far as 'romance triangles' go, the one with Aerie is done decently (especially compared to anything Bioware did afterwards, except maybe kinda Jade Empire)

My problem with NWN is that its campaigns are pretty much forgettable. OC is bland as fuck and pretty much just a test of what they could do with the editor, even when you read the design document what it was supposed to be like originally. Expansions are better because OC lowered the bar to a point of nonexistence, but at least they feel like adventures and not checklists Bioware loves to do.

If you want a Cleric/mage just use Aerie and if you want a Paladin just use Keldorn. Sorcerers aren't all that special, so I'd go for a Monk over those other options if I were you.
I mean if you're planning on taking that file to endgame ToB then by all means get a sorcerer, but otherwise a monk will be more different and interesting.

Fair enough. I can see how it would be immersion-breaking. I'm able to still enjoy it without losing immersion myself in spite of that.
In part it might be that I tried a few other NPC mods before it: compared to the disturbingly cringe-inducing writing in Saerelith and Chloe, the IR mod felt like a breath of fresh air.

Well i could say a lot as self proclaimed Forgotten Realms lore expert with 7 years of DMing experience. Almost all NPCs in BG2 are pretty strong so just go with whatever feels good. Remember to leave the sixth slot open for a "visiting" NPC so you can do their questlines.

Always recruit Keldorn unless you're an Inquisitor yourself. Keldorn is stupidly powerful (his double level Dispel ability trivializes many mage encounters) and just in general a cool guy.

If Anomen fails his knighthood trials, he goes maximum edge and starts insulting Keldorns god when Keldorn tries to talk some sense into him. Anomen then instigated the fight and gets rekt every time because he's up against an paladin armed with a holy avenger +5

For a good party, Keldorn does the heavy hitting (unless you do it yourself).
Valygar can add damage, mazzy is just okay.
Jann is your best thief choice(Yoshimo is Yoshimo, you get Imoen later, Nalia sucks).
Aerie is a good spellcaster.
Jaheira can heal if needed and can survive scraps, but late game falls of a bit (though when she gets access to epic spells, she picks up some slack).
Anomen is ok if you make sure he passes the test and treat him more for melee then cleric support.
Cernd is awful, Helis is functional but not great.

Mazzy is incredibly useful against mages once you get the gesen short now. The extra lightning damage goes through most protections. Coupled with unlimited arrows and grandmaster short now attack speed means mages never get a single non instant spell off.

Never used Keldorn myself in the later half of BG2 because i let him leave my party after his companion quest. He is not a fully fledged tank because of his best weapon being a two-hander but he can probably handle it. He's also really good versus mages and has some entertaining banter with both good and evil characters.

Keldorn is wonderful for tanking. Also he is an absolute magekiller with his dispels and true seeing. Then he can wield carsomyr that casts dispel magic on every hit without any saving throws.
