Steins Gate is the far superior time travel story and doesn't pretend it's not a VN.
I enjoyed it and thought it had memorable characters but I can completely understand why some people despise LiS.

I'm not talking about the story, I'm talking about the gameplay mechanics (yes, really). It's integrated much, much better with the story than anything TT's done.
Exploration is rewarded, there's optional collectables (which appeals to my autism), and the rewind mechanic is perfect. It feels like an actual story-game, not a walking sim or a QTE movie. It has nice balance.

Not that guy, but the rewind mechanic is absolutely the best thing about that game. It's not simply a "fuck this conversation up and rewind until you get the correct answer" mechanic. There are times where you're not satisfied with the outcome of the conversation no matter what, so you need to weigh the good with the bad.
The most powerful moment in the whole game was during the ending of episode two where you're trying to talk Kate down. Max and Chloe fucked around and spent the whole day bullshitting with her rewind power, so by the end of the day she exhausted all of her use for it, and was only able to use the rest of her strength to freeze time and get up to the roof and attempt to talk her out of suicide. When you get up to the roof and you find out you're no longer able to rewind and need to use the small things you observed in her room as a way to talk her down.
There was specifically a part where she says "Listen, Max. I know you're my friend and you care about me, and you're always there for me, but no one else is. None of my family or anyone else does." You're to respond with "But your Dad loves you no matter what." or else she jumps regardless of the conversation beforehand. You wouldn't know her dad cares about her if you didn't look at a postcard on her bedside table that has a bible verse and her dad telling her that she's his guiding light and that he'll always love her.
I guess it's just shit like that which really brought the game home for people like me.
