It's pretty good.
Go in blind, ignore the fanbase. Play in your own way, but if you want to, really try to see everything the game has to offer.

I went in wanting to like it, but it felt like a gutted gameboy color game. like something that was going for a weird mix of one of the zelda oracle games and an older final fantasy.
20 minutes in, I couldn't give less of a shit about anything that was going on, and dropped it. I didn't get it.

Ignore the shitters telling you to play it blind. The hugest flaw of the game is playing blind, then being told you fucked up. Detours A LOT of people from seeing the real glory of the game.

An amazing game with entertaining characters, fun and challenging sequences, and a style similar to Earthbound. And a bad fan base. Just don't kill everyone first, spare everything but two of the final bosses first then kill everyone in a different run.

Go with your gut and expect to play through it twice or 3 times.
or take the message to heart: It's an RPG with a "Spare" button.
