There's some cool lore shit going on, but most of the characters aren't linked to the plot in an important way, and many of them have extremely shallow personalities.
The battle system is difficult to get used to, especially after playing other Tales games, but it's actually well thought out and satisfying. The game is also strong in content, having a variety of difficulty levels, titles, skills, and items that change the way battles work, and some pretty hard endgame content.

Also Xillia has a GREAT story and combat system, but the second game manages to improve the combat system if you can ignore the new main character's OP ability. I recommend Xillia 1 and 2.

the combat systems are WHY I PLAY this series.
The title system way of grinding in this game was a very satisfying thing for me. It always felt like I was leveling with an inherent goal and wasn't just spamming a move like in vesperia. Made the characters feel much more personalized stat wise.

I've beaten ever tales game and couldn't get into xillia. It might be because ever since symphonia I've exclusively played them co-op and the battle system of that game seemed more aimed towards single player.

Is it worth it to get PS plus for a month just to get discounts on sales?
Bear in mind this was released as a budget package in Europe, so it's worth getting as a potential intro into the series.
There was also a 2-1 pack in the same range with both Xillia games.

I kinda liked the way two players could link up with the two remaining non-player characters. I played it co-op with a roommate, and we had to communicate as to when we were linking with the other characters, and even each other. Being able to switch playable characters on the fly also helps. Especially the slow-motion thing where you can bring in reserve characters to replace yours. I thought it was a shame that wasn't in Xillia 2. Would have made that one much more multiplayer friendly.
