It can be a self-insert or make up stupid shit character or waiting like an axe-wielding mage or some shit...

How do you make disgaea fun to play? The main story is just a terribly balanced and repetitive as fuck SRPG. You can build a party, but it's such a chore to fight boring battles and you'll ruin the game even further by levelling more overpowered units. I've often heard that disgaea has great gameplay but I just can't find it. What's the secret?

This is indeed a bit of an issue. In Disgaea D2 I took a character to level 500 or so just playing straight through the main story and using Triple Experience bills, sea angels, and Wild Groom. After a while it turns into a silly stomp match even at max enemy difficulty. The final boss still put up a bit of a resistance, but there's only so much they can do when the numbers are that far on your side.

Towards the end. Didn't kill the boss. I stopped using most of the others except yours and that thief/mothman combo for item world. I never finished it cause I got kicked out of the place I was living. Fast forward one year later, finally got my place and a PS4.
I was actually reminiscing about that run, that's what caused me to make the thread, I got tomorrow off so I wanted to try again with D5.
