Honestly the early access indie shit looks fun enough for me at this point, but the prospect of a much improved (maybe cheaper) unit does sort of suggest it would be better to wait.
you'll need a stronger card. Just make sure you know, if you swung your camera (head) around in a game and there is any framerate drop at all with a higher than 1080p resolution you WILL GET SICK in VR.

Should add though that I've got about 3 grand to just basically do what I want with, (where I don't spend much) but obviously wouldn't want to waste it all.
I have a 390 and it works perfectly fine for VR, even Elite Dangerous works fine in it. Anyone saying that's not enough is crazy.
Now regarding the headset itself, the Vive hardware is fucking amazing and all the glowing praise you hear about it is spot on. Anyone saying it's just a monitor strapped to your face is fucking retarded, not sure why people feel the need to shit their opinion out when they haven't even tried the technology. The major problem with VR currently is that there just aren't ANY meaty games for you to sink your teeth into, everything you're looking at is generally a 1-2 hour experience you'll play once and never again.
Currently I'd say if you aren't a developer (I am) or don't have a significant amount of disposable income, then you definitely shouldn't buy one just yet.

The multiplayer games are where the Vive really shines, being able to wave and gesture towards other people adds a surprising amount of fun to the experience. I haven't tried Hover Junkers yet, but Battledome is a lot of fun.
But yes, at the end of the day it is a lot of money for what it offers currently.
