Going alright
Implemented a quick item pick up thing. You can pick shit up and physically hold it.
I'm worried about how I'll do this with various types/shapes of items and item-specific animations. The fire extinguisher works alright with this "holding" pose when I just place it relative to the hand bone properly.
But I feel like shit is going to get complex and painful when I introduce more types of items, and multiple actions to perform with each item. Trying to think of a good way to sort of generalize it.

Most of the mechanics are working, timed hits in battle, items, cooking, some field skills, etc.

Game Maker, dude. Has a pretty simple drag-and-drop interface for object behaviour, there IS programming in Game Maker and I'd 110% recommend learning a language anyway, but if you really wanted to you could probably make a game in GM without a single line of your own code. I know I sure as shit did it back when I was 12 or 13.

Somewhere between Ikaruga and the Parodius series, I guess? Probably hard to gauge that from the pictures I've shown off so far since they've mostly been specifically picked empty area shots to show pixel art, but that's the end goal. I myself have ended up blowing a whole lot of time on making editor extensions for Unity and trying (and failing) to make a suitable touch-based shmup control scheme whilst the other two programmers have carried the gameplay a bit.

We have made a lot more progress recently though since we came to the realization that we shouldn't fall into the trap of needless over-optimization, tool creation and general fiddling until later on in the project when we can afford to.

I also think you should know exactly (or close to exactly) how you want the game to play. With that in mind you can design exactly the tools you need to achieve that end. Over-engineering results from a lack of direction.

If I were going to make a scrolling shooter I'd obviously start with scrolling backgrounds, bullet firing, moving enemies, and collision checks. Then I would move on to skeletal structures for multi-part enemies, then some of that camera stuff you were working on, checkpoints or mid-level events, etc.

I would actually say general fiddling is okay, but engineering tools without knowing how they're going to be used is a problem.

I haven't made actual progress on it but I used the storyline for screenwriting class for my game design course so I could progress on it

Enemies that cause a confusion status. A confused ally will sometimes do a random action to a random entity (party members and enemy alike) instead of the action you ordered them to do. This includes using consumable items like revive and health potions on enemies, or throwing its strongest spell on allies. The confusion status does not dissipate after the battle ends. While confused, your movements on the overworld will be randomly randomized (meaning that at random, "up" can become "right" while "right" becomes "down", "down" "left" and "left" "up", just set up your algorithm so all buttons stay mapped to SOMETHING and don't just disappear)

Great gameplay can save shitty/nonresistant story, but few want to slog through shit gameplay for a great story. And remember that good characters factor in as well. I remember once when I was grinding for the sword of kings I had Poo transform into an Atomic Power Robo, and then had Paula pray, which confused all of my party and every enemy, so the enemy Power Robo was healing my party and Poo was healing the enemies. It took like 10 minutes to end the battle because nothing could fucking die.

Oh, also: there is no item that removes confusion, and the healing spell that does remove it is one of the last you learn, meaning that for most of the game, you'll have to awkwardly fight the randomized controls to make your way to a town's healer if you ever get confused.
