I dropped W1 three times. Then I dropped W2. Not so long time ago I completed W1, then I read all books. And I must to say that playing not from 1st chapter without reading books is completely stupid.

I would say the minimum you should do is: read first two books (remember that Yen gets better in other books), watch some story recap of Witcher 1 on youtube and play Witcher 2.
