Impact from blows is lacking, but overall, combat was surprisingly in depth. You can switch between 3 different fighting styles on the fly and all are useful. Warrior uses a staff. It's slow, but does good damage. Rogue uses a dagger and gun. It's the quickest, but does the least damage. And Guardian uses a mace and shield. It's somewhere in the middle of Warrior and Rogue in both speed and strength.
I'm pretty sure the AI adapts if you start just mashing buttons. I noticed that if I mashed attack more, the enemies would counter a lot more. So you have to know which enemies do what so you can attack more, block more, or counter more. I actually died a lot in combat. It's not Bamham combat either.
