Scholar edition is my favorite Souls game.
In my opinion, 1 had the best worldbuilding, 3 had best presentation, but 2 (Scholar) had the best level design and balance.
They're all good in their own rights, but 2 was my favorite.

The hate for it has become more meme than legitimate criticism. It plays like a fan game that didn't have the same talent as the original, at times shit can be tedious like having to deal with an unnecessary abundance of enemies, but overall it's just a 7/10 type of game.
