The only thing that irks me about Unity's graphics is the hair. I know that simulating physics for 100,000 individual strands would kill any processor, but when a character has only around 5,000 extra-thick hair strands, it looks very fake. The thin, teenage looking faceial hair on the male characters is bad too.

Crysis 3 did this same thing and it was really annoying.
Basically, they put a ton of detail into the character's face while leaving everything else kinda shitty looking, but since your attention is on the face, theoretically, people won't notice everything in the background. To further cloak the differences in detail, all the cut scenes had the camera zoomed in way in on character faces. Shit was bizarre.
Not a new technique.
It's not technically stronger but a lot of PC's horse power is just lost through optimization because developers care more to optimize and develop for consoles first and foremost.
