How can a series that focuses on story over everything also have the worst stories in gaming history?
You honestly think IV had one of the worst stories ever? Have you played any video games past it?

>Using IV as an example
IV's story was pretty complex for its time as story driven RPGs were pretty uncommon at the time. Its very simplistic by todays standards though.

I've been playing games for 28 years. I have seen very few stories come close being as FFIV or X. Assasins Creed III maybe, since it shares many of the same ridiculous plot twists and bad character development as those games do.
>>342977147
I always thought it was kinda awkward and forced but it's historical relevance is palpable. V is really the first time they got story right imo
>>342977494
Is this a joke post?
>>342977502
V is my favorite game in the series and I always felt like the story took a backseat and they focused on the gameplay with the job system being the best in the main series along with X-2.
It served its purpose to move the game forward and was by no means bad but it was relatively simple.
Because it got lucky.

Complexity isn't always good writing. And in FFIV, it isn't even complex. You lose party members just to open up slots in your party or for a weak dramatic effect. And each example of this is later proven to be pointless to the story.
Also, a game like Dragon Quest IV came out before FFIV. And had both a chapter focused story and 8 playable characters, without the need of making any of them die or leave the party. FFIV was just poorly executed in both story and game triggers.

OP here. And while I still contend that the story in FFIV is horrible, it is one of the few times that the women had a better role than the men. Rydia and Rosa feel like the only sane and well developed characters in a world of stupid people.

Did you not read his last sentence or
>>342978130
OP is clearly either shitposting or retarded
>>342977502
>VI is really the first time they got story right imo
fixed that for you. VI is one of the few times in the franchise where story and gameplay worked together instead of one or the other.

X had a great story awkward laughing memes aside. It did a great job with world building and it left you in the dark about a lot of plot elements until Tidus discovers them. A few things were hinted likeAuron being unsent. The main parties development was done pretty well and I can't think of any established subplots that were not resolved or just left hanging incomplete.
>>342978130
Did you not understand my post? FFIV did not have a complex story even for its time. Games that came out before had more complex (and better developed) stories.
>>342978101
I somewhat agree.
What else you don't like FF4 OP?
>>342978196
>It did a great job with world building and it left you in the dark about a lot of plot elements until Tidus discovers them.
This is actually why I feel like FFX had a bad story. Its 'Tidus' story'. Except for 90% of it is Tidus being a tag along following Yuna and her guardians. If its Tidus' story, then really the only relevant parts of the game are the very beginning and after you get the airship near the end. Everything in between is world building. Which world building isn't bad. But world building with no development of the plot is just pointless filler.

Just that pretty much every story point is an overdone cliche you could find in a 1930s hollywood movie. Right down to 'saving Rosa in the nick of time', 'teammate sacrifices himself to save you' and 'you were being used the whole time'. I mean, this is Metroid Other M level storytelling. Metroid Other M literally used the same cliches.
>>342978654
I see.
>>342978654
This is a good point. Now that I think about they really did load it up with overused cliches that have been in the movie industry for ages.
>>342978775
To be fair, those cliches actually came from books. But were made worse by Hollywood movies. Ever watch something like the 1930s version of Man in the Iron Mask? Holy crap, every single scene is laughably cheesy.
Final Fantasy apparently was trying to imitate the movies. And it really shows in the cutscenes.
>>342977147
>IV
>worst story in gaming
You haven't played many video games have you? Or even Final Fantasy games for that matter, either that or you're so cynical you can't enjoy some cheese.
>>342979415
>its good as long as you accept its cheesy
I guess I understand the mindset of people who like the Star Wars prequels.
>>342979415
What does Sun Tsu have to do with your point? It certainty has nothing to do with FFIV.
>>342979657
IV has always been cheesy you stupid nigger, you don't need to warp your mind to see it.
>>342979803
First day?
>>342979837
>you stupid nigger
How ironic since you aren't understanding my point. That FFIV tries to be overly dramatic. But that drama falls apart because of its cheese.
>>342980331
>tries to be overly dramatic
No it is overly dramatic, it certainly isn't just trying to be, that's what makes the cheese so good while you still feel for the characters.
>>342978193
>VI is one of the few times in the franchise where story and gameplay worked together instead of one or the other.
FFVIII was another. In before I get flamed for this.
>>342981586
Drama falls apart if you can't take it seriously. If drama falls apart because of cheese, you either get something that is unintentionally funny like Judge Dredd or just stupid like Metroid Other M. FFIV wasn't unintentionally funny to me. It was just stupid.
