Active spotting was bullshit though. It ruined the need of flanking in BF4 and made some of the choke pointy maps way to unbearable. Not to mention the overpowered Dorito spotting in BF4 lead to people literally only focusing on thier mini map.

The easiest way to fix it, however, is to revamp the class selection and "flesh out" the team.
Basically, players are either specialists outfitted with exotic weaponry, standard infantry (with sidearms) that lead a pair of bots with sophisticated AI that are standard infantry soldiers of world war I, and play a very specific role in and of themselves, or they control the vehicles.
Now, if the AI is shit, that idea is totally worthless, but if the AI approaches the behavior of how a real player would play with that, then it might have some merit.

-Limited to 1 SMG or semi-auto rifle per squad, given to squad-leader.
-4-5 people per squad.
-You can only form a squad if there are no open spots in a squad.
-If you aren't in a squad you are stuck with bolt-action rifle or a LMG.
-LMGs are automatic but have atrocious godawful recoil if they aren't deployed or you aren't prone.
-Assault gets flamethrowers or rifle grenades or shotguns as well as bolt action to keep the incentive for playing them over LMG. Also pistols.
-Medic is bolt action and later pistol. The fact that the medic class is not able to be a frontline commando like before is a positive. Might be chosen less often but that's a good thing as far as I am concerned.
-Support is LMG and stuff like the Stokes mortar.
-Sniper is sniper.
Chief goal would be to keep every billy from playing an LMG to get his full auto fix.
Alternatively have "Dynamic" and "Realism" mode. Dynamic mode is as it will be on release, Realism mode is above. Or simply let servers dictate how many weapons are allowed/ect.

Also bolt action is 1 shot 1 kill. Maybe 2 shots to kill if you hit lower leg or arm but torso/head should be instakill. SMG takes traditional BF4 style bulletsponge amount of ammo, shotgun is shotgun as usual, and I think most of the semi auto prototypes in WW1 or there abouts were slightly smaller caliber than bolt action so they could take 2-3 shots instead of 1.
Also just incentivize bolt actions over semi autos in some way - maybe semi auto have a jamming function/risk if you fire them too quickly and too often.

Pretty much. I thought RO did a good job of balancing realism with a good gameplay experience. Bolt actions are the most common weapon but you have a bit more semi/full auto than you might have had in real life (Then again as I understand the Soviets went hogwild with the burpguns). Both the German and British recon soldiers in multiplayer are black. I know a few black people fought in WW1 but 1/4 Germans weren't black so it's not an accurate representation. They are sacrificing historical accuracy for something that doesn't enhance the game play.
