I'd say it's more of an RPG combat system than an action combat system like dark souls, despite DD being much flashier and more impactful.
In DD your skills and equipment matter more, but in Dark Souls your reactions and timing mater more.

As much as I loved the combat in this game, that's all there is to it. You can do nothing else. Skyrim, even if not Daggerfall-level, had a lot more things to it other than combat.
