You worded that really bad. But here's the full spoiler on that.

Anna Graem was a girl suffering from nano-machine rejection, which would have killed her and built up a lot of nanomachines in her. However, after losing her arm, she manages to survive the infection...and then promptly gets hit by a truck on her way out the hospital.

Mrs. Graem, stricken with the loss of a loved daughter, decides to "replace" her with a lilum and signs up for the lilum adoption program. She receives a bot that she names Rebecca Dolores (something) Graem.

Rebecca, or Becky as she is known, notices her foster mom's sorrow at her lost daughter. Mrs. Graem also realizes that its wrong to replace her daughter on some moral level, and every once in awhile, catches herself doing something weird, like preparing to give Becky a gift that would have been suitable to the late Anna, but then returning it. Etc.

Becky eventually reaches mental maturity for a lilum to gain a new, more adult body. But for some reason, perhaps she just enjoys sex, or because it was easy money for her, or maybe even just because she realized she could fill a market niche, Rebecca decides not to take this test and instead start working as a full time professional escort and whores herself out. Becky goes through numerous names, such as Dolaras Haze, before eventually settling on a name that's easy to remember, Dorothy.

Meanwhile, the amount of Nanomachines in Anna's body create a sort of ghost in the machine, a digital copy of Anna that exists out there in some form as a ghost. Jill, for some inexplicable and possibly contrived reason, has the preset mind necessary to perceive Anna, while the others don't. Anna was probably wandering around and noticed that Jill could see her, and decided that messing her was more fun than being dead.
