The only challenge one will ever face while playing Undertale could be the Genocide run bosses, Mettaton, and Asgore.
I don't give a shit about any of the characters, and yet the game gets mad at me if I don't. The game, for some reason, gets pissed if I defend myself and kill enemies that try to kill me, like Undyne or Mettaton. And then it tries to make me feel bad about it

The idea is that you are pacifist in spite of the odds. in spite of the violence thrown your way. The idea is that you extend kindness when people dont fucking deserve it. The game even breaks it's own "no violence" rules during one of the final bossfights, and admits that you cant win everything by being pacifist 100% of the time. There's an underlying theme. It's not deep, it's not subtle, and you seem to have missed it entirely.

That "gay bullshit" doesn't even happen until the very end of the pacifist run, besides that one NPC you'll only encounter if you backtrack.
Nah, the game is mediocre, the only "gimmik" that makes it outstanding from other games is the "kill everyone or dont" aspect.

Burgerpants was literally the best character in Undertale.
Appears out of nowhere, with a good amount of informative dialogue, catchphrases, humour, and some fantastic reaction faces. A joint smoking dweeb who longs for death after so many conventional characters really made him stand out, I liked him a lot.

The game doesn't feature any 'memes', but it's fairly obvious that the entire game is inspired by our current internet culture, and because of that the game is far less endearing than something like Earthbound. The characters especially are literal walking punch lines, I find it really strange that the Undertale fanbase somehow makes all this super complex and in depth fan fic when these characters have like 10 lines each usually comprising of silly jokes.
Still, I like the story for breaking the fourth wall in a creative way, and sometimes the bullet hell gameplay was fun occasionally and I liked the genocide/pacifist options

There are so many other factors than just the game itself. In this case, I'd say the creator's previous involvement in Homestuck had far more to do with this fanbase than the game did. Hell, in a lot of cases you get large parts of these fanbases that haven't even played the thing and just hopped onto it because they saw it growing in popularity. Hating anything for the fans is just purposefully choosing to be closeminded.
