Why does the Jap alphabet not make any sense?
Not to mention that they have symbols for syllables instead of actual letters like every normal language in existence but each group ending with the same vowel has absolutely no connection between them.
>>342850157
How the fuck would I go to a high school if I already graduated you dense fuck?

>>342850576
It doesn't make any sense because you're trying to apply the logic of other alphabets to it. A writing system is just a bunch of symbols you need to memorize. Stop thinking so hard about it.
I've been fucking with Japanese for some time and for some reason katakana still won't stick in my mind, just because its not really used as much.

Jesus Christ /v/ you're an embarrassment. It's hilarious how you go on with your hate for weeaboos because of their lack of culture and self awareness while being the very embodiment of that yourselves.
>>342850576
How fucking retarded are you? Their kana are single letters for their language. They don't have a single g, all they have are ga, gi, gu, ge, go. Even if you need two roman symbols to describe the sounds, in their language they are the most atomic particles you could need to describe all the sounds their words make.

i think that's because, rather than building their writing system from the ground up, they adapted the Chinese system to suit their needs.
>>342851058
That's what I'm fucking saying. Why not have just a symbol for a,i,o,e,o which they have and a single symbol for 'g' instead of 5 extra unrelated symbols.

>>342851620
Yes, that's also part of why they fucking suck at pronouncing english. The only sound they have that isn't accompanied by what we'd call a vowel is the n, written as ん.

Most asian languages work like Japanese though.
>>342852096
Depends on what your interests are. If you're really interested in a particular aspect of a foreign culture, you learn that language. If you really want to move to or work in a certain country, you learn their language.
Don't fall for the "learn this language for more business prospects" meme. Any company worth working for will hire English speaking employees. You're already set.

To be fair anon, both of those languages are really fucking difficult, so you can start with either one. Maybe one will make the other one easier to learn.
It's really a case of what this anon said >>342852547
Just start on a language and keep at it. It's important to be consistent and to make progress every time you hunker down to learn some shit. Just like uni. But this time, you're trying to enjoy it.
>>342850209
>There's no reason to learn anything besides English. Besides personal interest in a particular language.
Actually there is not reason to learn anything other than your country native languages
>>342852575
If you can't remember symbols in your long term memory after an hour you should probably just kill yourself, you're never going to learn Japanese. I've got the N1 and I learn Kanji after seeing them twice, excluding the compounds obviously.

Been doing it for three years. Even get official translation jobs from time to time. I've done like, 20 of those in the last year. Also been playing games in Nip almost exclusively for nearly two years, though I think I'm starting to burn out a bit. My Japanese is getting better, but I still have to look stuff up and that adds up after nearly two years.
>>342848698
Because i'm to busy trying to learn korean.
I'm in this country for the next 2.5 years, so I might as well.
Only problem Is I apparently suck at learning languages. Come to think of it I did suffer from a speech impediment early on, and always had trouble with writing, so my mind must not be wired right to learn languages quickly.
>>342853047
Best reason.
>>342852575
I've stopped telling people this, but yeah, you're absolutely right. It pisses me off just a little bit whenever people talk about learning the kana in a few hours when it'll then take them as long to read any text. The word learning is fucking pointless if we're not talking about full internalization.
>>342852835
Unless you have a photographic memory from childhood, that seems very unlikely to have been the case at the start of your learning. Now that you're N1 level, sure, you've gotten accustomed to memorizing kanji and you have all kinds of shortcuts in place that you unconsciously use, but you likely couldn't fluently read hiragana after looking at them for an hour. Even after that hour you gradually learned them through reading lots of different things.
Does anybody have a .pdf for "Learning the Kanji"?
>>342852835
>If you can't remember symbols in your long term memory after an hour
This is everyone on planet earth who isn't a savant. People forget things over time if they don't repeat them. Especially some arbitrary set of symbols.
>>342852835
>"I'm so smart" the post.
Maybe you have good visual memory. It would take a bit more for regular people. I mean you can remember kanas fairly easy if you take the time, but most people would forgot most of them the next day if they don't review them.
>>342853112
Good stuff m8. At least you started unlike me who can't decide between Japanese and Korean.
Are the people here, who say that they learned hiragana in just two days, in their teens or early twenties?
Good luck you little shits
>>342853162
You mean "Remembering the Kanji"? That thing is a horrid way to learn kanji.
>>342853251
I'm 33 and I learned hiragana in a day. Took about 3 days for Katakana.
>>342853131
I don't have a photographic memory, I sat down for an hour, grinded the Hiragana and Katakana and could read them instantly. It's not difficult, just sit down and do it. People sit down, do it for 5 minutes, go and watch a YouTube video or something, do it for 5 minutes again, etc.
>>342853193
No shit you're going to forget them if you don't see them for a month when you start, but you should be able to instantly read Hiragana without pause after an hour.
>>342853221
Then they're dumb and should give up now, because there is absolutely zero chance of them completing the Core2k let alone the 6k.
>this thread
Well, STALKER got me into learning Cyrillic alphabet. I can still sound most words out, but I have no idea what they mean. Or how to use grammar right.
I guess I'll try Hirigana at least so I can read words without knowing vocab.ь, ы, and ъ still confuse me
>>342852835
You're a fucking idiot and literally all of biology disagrees with you. The brain subconsciously discards knowledge that it deems useless, and knowledge that you've only exposed yourself to for an hour and then don't return to is useless. Repetition is the most important part of a learning process. Go pick up a book on biology instead of trying to act tough despite spewing absolutely horsearse you tard.
>>342852954
A day of continuous learning might be enough for long-term memory. Definitely not working-memory though.
>>342853131
>>342853251
I'm 30 and I learned hiragana and katakana in like a month or so with work and stuff, I found much easier to learn hiragana first and then katakana, since they both have similarities
I personally recommend using nukemarine's playlist to learn the hiragana first
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL2A25F7399E8805ED
How do you even learn a language? How did I learn English? I remember having to take several years of Spanish in my K-12 education, and all I can do with that language is count to three, say hello, and say that I can't speak Spanish. I took 4 years of Latin and it all started tumbling down in my 4th year while trying to translate the Aeneid, I barely know any Latin now other than words that are obvious because English words came from them.
>>342848698
Because I tried to and lost. I admitted to myself that I don't have the will to do it shortly after passing N3.
>>342853724
You did the right thing, japanese is useless anyway.
>>342852835
I don't know how you can learn 80+ characters, that seem completely alien at first and have really delicate differences between some of them in a hour unless you are some kind of genius with photographic memory.
So either you are one and showing off or you're just lying.
>>342853619
>act tough
By knowing a language competently enough to speak on the standards of learning it. Sorry that your subhuman monkey brain can't pick up symbols properly, but if after an hour you can't recognize things instantly and remember them the next day you're literally never going to learn Japanese. Give up like every other pathetic foreigner that handwaves hardwork with meme exercises like using anime for "listening practice" and Wanikani.
>>342848698
If they made this game for kanji it might actually be useful
kana literally takes a couple hours tops, it's piss easy and only requires rote memory rather than any convoluted gamification
>>342853572
>I guess I'll try Hirigana at least so I can read words
Gonna need kanji for that, dude
>>342853685
The best way to learn a language is to get dropped into the middle of a culture of native speakers so that you're constantly in the midst of it.

I tried learning Japanese and I got pretty far for a years worth of learning, can make out most sentences even if I don't know the kanji, but holy shit, its such a useless language. Its not good for any real world application. Spanish and Arabic are the two most important secondary languages now, its better to learn one of those.

Eh, I guess for job opportunities maybe. Spanish, English, Mandarin, and maybe, I don't know, French and German? They're probably the best for that, but it's really up to the individual. I have many more uses for Japanese than any of them (except English). I'd like to study Chinese as well as it seems kinda interesting, but likely will not because I have absolutely no uses for it at all.
>>342848698

>>342853685
Immersion, that's all you need. I fucking sucked at Latin my first three years, but when we got to the fun stuff (like reading the Aeneid) I got my ass into gear and just read a fucking bunch. Immersion is how you learned English, your native language if it isn't English, and how you could learn any other language.
Unless that language has thousands of arbitrary symbols, that makes it a bit harder. Still, if you spend 10 years just reading shit with furigana you'll probably end up learning a bunch of kanji as well.

ь - called soft sign. It's to make a somewhat drawn out sound in the middle or end of the word.
For example тeнь (shadow). Without it it would read like "ten" in english and with it it sounds something like "ten-ye"
ъ - hard sign. same but to indicated sharp stops.
For example oбъeкт (object). Without it it would read 'obekt' and with it it's read as 'obyekt'
ы - doesn't really have an analog in English.
Used in words like pыбa (fish).
It's best you go and hear some pronunciations of words with those letters because it's really hard to explain in text.
>>342854131

>No shit you're going to forget them if you don't see them for a month when you start
If you stopped using and seeing English for the next month you would still remember all of it. That's generally what people mean when they say something is "learnt". I've been out of school for several months now and I could still do most of the math I was exposed to in that time. The stuff I can't do is the stuff I crammed for a few hours for an exam and never touched again.
So no, you did not "learn" kana in an hour. You temporarily memorized it in an hour to be able to start reading meaningful things to properly retain the symbols. How long is temporary? Depends on the person. But temporary memorization by itself is not meaningful learning.

When I learned English, which was my second language, I didn't forget English letters the next day, week or month. If you took me on my first day and hid me in a cupboard for a month, maybe, but I was learning it casually and never forgot it. I don't have a photographic memory, I just put in the time with studies.
So yes, I did "learn" kana in an hour. Stop projecting your inabilities onto other people, you should just admit to yourself that your brain is too slow to properly process symbols and try and fix it. Otherwise, let the reality that you'll never be able to read Japanese sink in and get over it.

Don't forget Korean's pronunciation is very hard for foreigners, and there are tons of exceptions in spelling -> pronunciation.
If you're just learning as a hobby or for vidya, go with JP. If you want to learn for fun or future professional reasons, KR.
I personally have had a harder time with Korean than Japanese because of the pronunciation and the drastic changes in speech patterns based on the speaker's age compared to the listener.
