Follow the main quest, is the easiest way to get exp, and it increases exponentially as you play.
Also, to earn money, loot fucking everything, and sell the weapons and armors you find from bandits and chests that you won't use.

it's called the catriona plague (named after the ship that had the plague cat on board, and spread the disease), and the book says Shani goes to try and help with medical attention for the plague victims, with a dwarf surgeon named Rusty
both of them die of the plague there
and it's only about 7 years after the books, which leaves about 2 years after the games are set (I think they said it was a 5-year difference?)
so Shani dies very shortly after the witcher 3

Avoid enemies that are much higher level than you. Sidestep should be your go to choice when dodging. Rolling is for getting away from enemies. Unlike darksoul enemies don't have homing attack. You can dodge very early and avoid the attack.
