Mount & Blade Warband. It's $5 on Steam. Shitload of mods if vanilla setting's not your flavor (but I would give it a whirl to get used to the mechanics).
LOTR? Cool. ASoIaF? We got that too. There are historical mods too. Also original fantasy mods. Warwolf is some kind of beautiful Russian clusterfuck where you got Roman Empire vs Three Kingdoms China vs Sengoku Japan vs Aztecs vs Crusaders, etc.
