Downgrade pistols. If you have no weapon skills at all the game will upgrade pistols for you, which is free 1500 points at the start. After the game starts raise low-tech, for a guaranteed knockdown when clubbing mooks from behind with the prod or the baton, swimming, because one rank nearly doubles your initial swim speed, which is inadequate, and medical, because it doubles the yield from health kits.
Your priorities should be computers and rifles. Computers increases hacking speed, unlocks options and gives you more money from ATMs. Rifles is the uncontested reigning king of weapon skills, and sniper rifle on master can destroy turrets, cameras and alarm panels. You can make do with pistols, and melee is viable if you're patient and build for it. Heavy weapons are not worth it; flamethrower sucks, plasma rifle is bugged and also deals the same damage type as the flamethrower, which all bosses and all elite mooks resist extremely well, and the GEP gun does its job perfectly even at untrained.
You can usually open doors with the GEP gun of LAMs, but lockpicking and electronics should still be your second priority. Sometimes explosions are bad for you.
Don't put ranks in environmental. Ever. Whatever your style is, environmental is never going to be worth it.

It's the simple things that get me. I spent my first five hours picking locks before I realised that a crowbar could open up a wooden door just as well as a lockpick. It blows my mind even now, and the best part is that it makes complete sense.
So many games insist that you need a certain key or some shit to get past a door or passage that you could probably just brute-force your way through in real life, and Deus Ex is one of the only games I've played that lets you say "Yeah, fuck that, just bash that shit open."

Yeah, when the door is solid, and actually looks as if it's impenetrable. It just draws me in and makes the game more immersive when you can do something that goes against traditional game tropes, but makes perfect sense when you think about it. Kind of like getting past laser-triggered bombs by tossing a cardboard box through the lasers or killing off that boss character early before they can be any real threat or blocking a doorway with a soda machine so the bad guys can't get to you.
